280sl driver and passenger window in the UK
« on: December 03, 2016, 13:50:18 »
Hi Gentlemen,

I have been quiet for a while rectifying a few errors made by German restorers on my bare metal restored 1968 280sl.

Raikku (Waffzuff in Surrey) who is working on my car flagged that it has sub par US made replica side windows that are not even identical in size and shape.

I am trying to source proper original ones or excellent after market items.

Could someone point me in the right direction please?

I would rather purchase something from the UK or Europe rather than America.

What am i looking to pay?

Is there anything else i should know about swapping windows?

Raikku is adamant that those are the source of all the wind noise and lack of water tightness that i am getting.

Thanks in advance to the members of this wonderfull forum.

Eric.

Hi Eric

Have you checked the common suppliers in Germany such as SLS and Niemöller? Look at the Suppliers page in the Tecnical Manual on this site for links. In addition to the window glass you also need proper window guides to be fitted. Also available from above suppliers.

I think you can get these from Mercedes, give Shaun at Sandown Poole a call, 01202 641855

He's a good guy.

Thank you kindly gentlemen!

Any idea if there are different types? As in shapes depending on the year of the car? Or different tints?

And approx cost?

So I have checked Niemoller and they only have the relpica ones with the circled T which look similar to the one i have on my car.

The reason why i want to change them is that they are not straight at the top meaning they won't seal properly with the door leading to huge wind noise.

Mercedes only has right hand door windows and no left hand door in stock. It could be weeks before they get them.

Really frustrating. I would buy replicas if i was sure that they would not have the bent shape of my current windows...

Any idea pls shout.

Eric,
even the original door windows are NOT straight on top! The front and rear end edges are lower than the middle; see photo.
The front-rear tilt can be adjusted two ways. (a) the glass can be tilted a bit as shown in the third panel and (b) the complete scissor lifting structure can be tilted as shown in the bottom panel.
If your mechanic has never done a window adjustement he may be in for some frustrating hours. In addition to the front/aft glass tilting as described there is a critical in/out tilt, that is, on a closed window the top must meet the upper horizontal seal groove  and that is achieved by adjusting the front and rear bolts of the window tracks at the bottom of the door.
First time to do this can take a week!
Also ".... sub par US made replica side windows that are not even identical in size and shape"...
No matter how hard and long he'll search the left and right window are never identical.
I very much doubt that this is a window problem.

There's a reason why I charge more than others!
