Trunk Paint Supplier & Code

In the Technical Manual the color for the Trunk Interior is listed as 000 986 67 33 - 7164 or DB 64. It is also said the be available through Mercedes, however and call to Tom Hanson at Mercedes, tells me that they no longer supply that paint.

So, does anyone know how to get it, or a substitute, these days?

A local restoration shop has just completed the replacement of the trunk floor in my 280SL and the are ready to paint, but when the tried to order the paint with that code, they could not get it from the local Mercedes dealer, or their paint supplier.

That should be DB 164 Dunkelgrau (Dark Gray).
I have attached a color card.  It can be made up using PPG paint, I assume, by just about any automotive paint shop.  My painter had no problem mixng it up himself.  It's really, really dark gray - almost black.  I don't know why the card has two formulae.  I assume either yields the same result.  One formula has a tiny bit of ocher that the other one does not.  I don't know which my painter mixed up for my car.  He may have called his PPG rep to get the base coat/clear coat formula for DB164.  That's what he did for the DB 332 car color.

The card came from the 190SL group web site and is their trunk color also.
They might be able to better advise you exactly how to get the paint mixed up, depending on what kind of paint system you want.  I used a PPG base coat/clear coat system.

Tom & Roland, sorry I can't help with sourcing the correct paint.  However, the paint is a dark gray as mentioned and is "flat" or "non-gloss" but to my eye it is not almost black.  It is difficult to gain much help from pictures but for an example of the color see image 1342 in my post #638 of Dec 8, 2016, under the topic, "What have you done to your Pagoda today" which is under the major heading, "General Discussion." 

Good luck with sorting out the color.

If I remember right, the trunk paint color is the same code as the rocker panels.  There have been several discussions about the color.  In my garage, with its poor lighting, it's black.  Outside in the sun, when we get sun here in Quebec, it's dark gray.  I'm terrible with colors, so I'll defer to others.

According to the posts in the Technical Manual the rocker Panels were done with a different color. If I remember correctly, they were a true black, while the trunk was this Dark Gray color.

Hi Tom,

The problem I had reading the Tech Manual was that the info on the Dark Gray Paint was out of date. Mercedes Classic Center told me that they no longer offer that paint and they said that their dealers can't get it either. So, I was trying to find out what people are using today.

I called Glasurit and they gave me some info that I passed on to my body shop along with the info that I received from everyone there.

Some people believe the rocker panels were dark grey, not black. Me too.

If you look at the "Paint Codes" page, it shows a 169 code for the Rocker Panels.

Yes, and look two paragraphs below that:
"(According to another discussion starting in January of 2011 titled Rocker Panel Color, the idea has been presented that the rockers were, in fact, a dark grey, and not black. Also, they seem to be more of a semi-gloss than a flat finish. Original cars, with an original owner in one case, give good evidence that the rockers are dark grey. Additionally, there is evidence that there was paint brushed on the light colored screw heads to camouflage them.)"

You must realize that just because it is written in the tech manual that does not make it fact.
I mean no disrespect, simply the tech manual was written by mortal men like you and me.

Hello Mark,

Were you referring to the discussion part of the tech manual on the colors? The link I sent was not to that part, but rather to the Paint code chart that lists all of the codes for all of the colors. It has a listing for a code for the Rocker Panels in the spread sheet.

Now, I do not know how that was put together. I had assumed it came from some source at Mercedes. Perhaps I was wrong in assuming that.

I have no idea about the color of other 113 rocker panels but the picture shows the color of mine.  Gray, not black, not dark gray.  It is a 1966 230SL that my wife and I bought new. Rocker panel have never been repainted.  This picture was taken just before the car was repainted earlier this year.  I looked at the screws holding the rocker panels on now and they are a mixture of bright and painted screws so they may not be the original screws since the rocker panels were removed for repainting.

My car's underside is painted in two colors. Part is painted in the color of the rest of the car and part is painted a cream color.

I spoke with David Latham at BudsBenz about that and he sent me photos of cars that came into his shop that way as well. So, he said that was how the factory painted some of the cars.

I guess I had forgotten this thread was started about the trunk paint color.  So, I took a picture of my trunk.  Never been painted since new.  It appears black to me.  It is not real shiny but is not flat either.  Perhaps if it had been polished a little, it could be shiny.

Somewhat subjective I guess! Looks relatively shiny and black in the picture as does my 1969 (shot with flash).  In natural light however, to me, mine looks grey not block and flat, not very shiny. 

Anyway, we haven't solved the supply problem.  Maybe we should get one of the paint suppliers to mix a small batch matching one of these original trunk spaces.
