Putting a rearvision mirror on the passanger side

Have many people done this on the 230SL? If so did you make it line up with the other mirror or did you place it slightly further towards the back of the car for better visibility? 
I have 2 right hand side mirrors and eventually (not yet) I will be in the market to swap one for a LHS mirror. (both mirrors are genuine, not after market).

Hi Col,
If I remember correctly there is a difference between a LH and RH mirrors for the LHD and RHD cars.
The passenger side mirror needs to turn much more 'in' towards the driver than the drivers mirror. Therefore the LH mirrors for a LHD and RHD differ as does the RH mirrors for the RHD and LHD cars.
I am not sure if this is true for the early Pagodas(230/250SL) or the later(250/280SL) ones, but it is worthwhile to check.

Ps. You will also find the passenger side mirrors are much more expensive than a regular drivers mirror

Hi Col,

From what I've read on this subject is that most members here feel that adding this mirror is fairly useless. Also we don't need it on 2 lane highwayays were we do most of our cruising and on express ways we normally stay in the slow lane anyway. At one time I wanted to add a passenger mirror myself then gave up on that idea.

I must agree with you. However, it is very usefull if you own and drive a lefty in a RHD country, as I do, but then you must have the correct mirror and in the correct position.

Col,

The second mirror must be slightly further back.  Don’t ask how I know but if they are both the same position then the left hand one does not get much of a look behind as it is blocked by the A pillar somewhat.

You need to find one that is correctly fitted and measure how far back it is from the door lip.

I have the mirror, and it's in the same position, relatively speaking, as that on the driver's side. The only issue with it is it isn't easy to adjust (leaning over with the window open) when static, impossible when moving.

I should note that a few years ago, for a small fee, I bought from the classic center the convex mirror glass and put it in BOTH mirrors. Makes both more usable.

Michael, note that Col has a 230SL. Those swan neck mirrors cannot be at the same relative position.

Ihave a rhd and I added a passenger mirror.
I am away from the car at the moment but if I remember it sits the same distance away from the glass but further back. I put masking tape on the door with a line to represent the centreline of the mirror. I sat in the driving seat and my wife moved it until I had clear vision. She marked its position.
I dont think there is any "genuine" position. Remember that the door skin is aluminium so you will need a good backing late. There may be a plate in there already for when its lhd but it wont be of any use.
Because the glass is flat and fairly small, the view isnt panoramic but set correctly it helps. A cooperative passenger is a must to adjust it

What I do to adjust the passenger side mirror 'solo' is kneel on the passenger side beside the car, at 'ride height', then adjust the mirror until I can see the headrest (which is where my head will be when driving). Works pretty well.

when my father purchased his 230sl in Germany the passenger side mirror was mounted up on the right front fender. 

maybe that was before the convex mirrors were available....

I think I will try someone holding it at 72mm back from the front edge and use this as a starting point:

"The DRIVERS side is 62mm from the leading (front) edge of the door to the start of the chrome base, and the PASSENGERS side is 72mm. That is the chrome not the rubber gasket." ---- from the post 66and Blue linked.

I'll also look into getting some convex glass for both too as this sounds like a great idea.  And I'll post a wanted/to sell add to see if anyone has an original LHD drivers mirror they want to swap for an original RHS driver mirror.

You really only need the mirror stem as everything else is the same on either side.
