1967 250SL 5 Speed on ebay
« on: December 22, 2016, 22:38:45 »
I saw this on ebay.  It has some pretty strong bids.  What are everyone's thoughts on this car.  It looks like a very nice car.  I only see a few things that could be more correct.  Without seeing the data card is there a way to tell if the 5 speed is original to the car?

The blue/charcoal combination is not inspiring...is it original?  Car may be an Italian import, given the little round marker light.  Radio plate, amber turn signal lenses and later wheel covers are jarring notes.  The bids certainly strong...Jon

It likely is an Italian car being that it's euro, it has those small round lights, and it's a 5 speed. Many 5 speeds were sold into Italy.

No rear body side chrome which could be fixed easily enough but at that price it should be on the car.

Not a horrible restoration but with a few issues.  I see a fair amount of pitting on the gas tank and rear axle which leads me to believe this was a rusty car.  Correct me if I am wrong but didn't 5 speed cars come with lower(numerical) ratio than 4.10?

I say this as often as I can but if you are contemplating a car that was imported into the US after original sale somewhere else be carefull of mileage statements like 23,000 original miles!  USDOT regulations mandated that cars must have spedometers that read in miles per hour.  That means if the car came with a KPH speedometer it would have had to have been swapped out at importation and a sticker should have been affixed to the door jamb listing the previous kilometers traveled before the speedometer was changed.  You would be surprised at how many of those stickers "fall off" along the way. Funny thing is the ones I have seen appear to be very well made metal foil affairs that seems like they woul stick for a long time.

The car also is missing an outside mirror and I would have expected that the car would have the chrome strip between the rear bumpers.

I noticed the chrome missing on the rear quarters right away.  Good catch on the mirror.  With such a fresh car and the details put in you would think they would have finished the few items we see missing...  It is well beyond my price range...  I do like the details of the clamps on the rear axle.

With a new leather interior, the door cards are still in vinyl, pressed in lines across the top of the door, versus the stitched lines in a leather interior.

To me this is an example of a restoration done to cost. "You've got X to spend - make it look as good as possible."  The radio delete plate missing it's logo. The window knobs not matching the dash knobs. Incorrect firewall pad material. The black goo sprayed all over the undercarriage but then applying some gold paint in conspicuous places to look "authentic." The wrong brake booster. The engine accessories that should be plated have a strange appearance - paint? The battery missing hold down clamps. The mismatched upholstery. The missing rear quarter chrome strips, etc., etc.

It's interesting that two words most often associated with vintage cars '' Classic and Concours '' tend to somehow end up being used by used car dealers more than any other description.  Neither describes this car but that's hardly new.

Italian rear number plates were square, so it is possible that Italian Pagodas weren't fitted with the chrome strip between the rear bumpers.

Didn't meet reserve at $117K , which isn't surprising since it is listed on their web site at $160K.  Lot of money for a car missing some pretty inexpensive parts.  Is it me or does the head liner look all wrinkled above the passenger side window?
