Which Model 123Ignition is Best for 1965 230SL?
« on: December 26, 2016, 22:37:11 »
Hello, Members.

After having my car quit right after a tune-up from failure of new ignition points, I've decided to convert to electronic ignition and use the 123ignition system.  From the US website, it looks like there are three options:  Merc 6-R-V; Merc 6-R-V-M USB programmable; and Merc 6-R-V-M programmable blue tooth.  Is their one that is recommended over the others?

Also, what other hardware is needed for a successful conversion?  The Mercedes pinch clamp?

Lastly, install with spring or no-spring?  I think the forum consensus is no-spring.

Many thanks,

Rich

Thanks, Dieter.

I've read the tech manual info as well as the related discussions within the forum, especially concerning the "spring".  I can see that it's now recommended to not use a spring with a new 123Ignition unit.  I've also found that there are YouTube videos that show the BlueTooth compatible version of the 123Ignition which allows programming from an iPad app.

Just wanted to add that I have the 123 (actually have versions of it in several cars), and i really like them.

No spring and 6-R-V here.

Hi, Michael.

Thanks for the confirmation.  I have ordered the 6-V-R-M blue tooth model along with the pinch clap.  Will post how my installation goes once it's done.  Won't install the old spring.

I really can't understand the need for the programmable version. These are not hot-rods we're dealing with.
Can anybody attest to having witnessed any noticeable improvement in performance having re-mapped their pagoda engine?

Only benefit I could see for a bluetooth or usb programmable unit is if you happen upon some 102 octane on your travels and want to "kick it up a notch"
The Bluetooth model has an optional antitheft feature that requires a pin number for the car to start. Thats kind of neat but if you loose your phone, not only can you not call anyone, your walking home as well.

I added the programmable version to my car a couple of years ago.  The basic map proved to be an excellent replacement for the crane ignition I had in it.  However, after playing with the second map a bit the first day, I never really went back to it.  A passenger can re-map it while you are driving, but I don't have a test track and precise enough speed and fuel efficiency measuring equipment to fine tune it.  If someone has a curve they can suggest, I'd be interested in giving it a try.
