What is really being sold here?  A scrap car or a "clear title" & VIN.      In this case, I would doubt it's the car.

That is Mike in Daytona.  He had the sunroof pagoda also.  Most of the cars he sells should have been in a salvage yard...  I talked to him once and it seems every car he has is rare and made of gold...

I wonder what the scrap handler near him would give him LOL on the other hand what he would charge him to take it off his hands to free his yard for more junk cars.

When I look at some of the fantastic restoration projects posted here I wonder if some of us finally end up replacing almost the same body panels that would be needed for this poor example   ;)
Even though the starting point seemed a lot better at the beginning...  ::)

I've done just that and never looked back. It was the right recommendation from Members here on this site. As a result I've put no more then about $3,000- into my car driven her now nearly 8,000 miles and enjoy her as often as I can.

While I would have loved to restore one of our cars at a younger age, I was just too busy in my family and professional life to do this.

I would agree with Oz on this one. They are really selling a title and VIN (but even that is a stretch given the price).

That's not what I meant. If you can't afford to pay cash you finance a purchase and this might be a good option for some. After all, people do it all the time when buying new cars.

Buying the best car you can't afford is the best advice to get the best car but those of us on a budget it doesn't always work.   

I have provided advice to several individuals who bought collector vehicles (most don't have them anymore).  The discretionary income thing with competing resources such as orthodontists / groceries /  electricity bills  tends to rear its ugly head meaning that the lump in the garage that has payments being made on it seems to be the first to go.   

I suggest to friends that it has to be all cash otherwise its un-affordable and you may loose it to competing interests if times get tough. 

For example with insurance costing $1,300 per year for a Harley -  its easier to put a cover over it and not ride it for a year to save money - but if you are making payments on it the bike will probably go. 

The 190sl in the pictures is just stupid money.

That seems like  the way of things but I think everyone is missing my point. ( not like that's ever happened here before  ;D )  How much has that 190SL  increased in value over the past couple of years? I bought my 190SL  in June of 1993 and at the time I paid cash for it. Later that year in December I bought the Red Rocket and in that case I did have to finance it. The value of my 190SL, which is not running right now, is now more than what I paid for both cars while the value of something like a new Harley or a new car will go down every year until it bottoms out.  So, regardless of what you paid for your 113, be it cash or finance, it will more than likely increase or at least stay the same during your payment period if you didn't pay cash. After all, didn't everyone say that they like the idea of the increasing values of MB vintage cars?

If you can afford it, buying the best car that you might have to finance makes a lot of sense. And, if you can lay down a good down payment on it, that could make it easier to consider.  Assuming that you bought a good car, the value of that car will continue to increase or at least stay current with market trends. If you want to sell for some reason, you should have a top level example that could go to a high end auction or dealership with the potential to bring a good return.
One of the reasons the old car hobby is so strong right now is because of low interest rates. Someone buys a vintage car, drives it a little bit on nice days, owns it for a couple of years and then they flip it. An easy 10 - 20 K ( or more ) and it's a done deal. You couldn't make that kind of money with a GIC.

I know that many people like to start with a small purchase and work their way up. That makes a lot of sense for most and I'm right there with you. However, having a turn key car that you can drive today, take to car shows, win awards, and then see a nice return if you decide to sell is rather attractive. Spending the next 5 years covered in rust, sweat, and tears might also be attractive for some but in the end it all comes down to buying the right car at the right price.

I hope I've explained this in an understandable way.

While reading the latest post on this, eBay sent me a note that the price was just lowered.

I don't know about $17.5K to buy a broken (literally, isn't it broken in half?) unrestorable 190SL for the VIN and title? If you move the VIN and title to another car, that's fraud. If you are going the fraudulent route, that buys a lot of expert forgery and there are far easier ways to generate a VIN and title...just saying.

BTW this is even in worse shape (albeit about the same price) as a 230SL I looked at 2 years ago here in Michigan...

As with the Ferrari prices rising through the roof back in the late 80's, the lowly unappreciated Ferrari models were pulled up from the floor up into the air, including the Dino.
This is happening again with the 190SL's as the prices have been rising so much that the most terrible ones are being pulled up too.
Already happening with the Porsche 356's, and now the 911's and 912's.
So this is a normal reaction.
As long as there is a buyer, the market will exist with these rotted out carcasses.
It should be a welcome sign to us all as more of these cars are preserved for the future.
