question about early Sudrad wheel
« on: January 21, 2017, 19:57:00 »
I just bought a 5.5j x 14 Sudrad (14004M/MB 113 400 00 06) with a production date of 3/63 and I noticed that the three pins that secure the center wheel cover are considerably larger in diameter than those of later production Sudrads.  The later Sudrads I have (2/64 and 3/64 production dates) have pins much smaller in diameter. The pictures below show pins on the 3/63 wheel; note the smaller pin on the 3/64 wheel.

Does anyone know why Mercedes (Sudrad) used the larger pins on earlier 14004M wheels?   thanks, charles

Usually when I see something like that my guess is they were denting too many hub caps on the assembly line or at the dealership so they shrunk the pins.

good point - I didn't even think about that.  you'd have to really rap a hubcap with the palm of your hand to get it to snap over these pins.
