One more mystery part...
« on: March 03, 2017, 00:42:08 »
Hi Folks,

In have a mystery part from my SL column.  This is one of those situations where I disassembled it with the full intention of putting it back together promptly...8 months later... I cannot for the life of me figure out what this is and where it goes.  I don't see it in any of the manuals.   I am pretty sure it came out of there, and I recall seeing it on one of my previous SL's also.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Allen

It looks to me like the piece of rubber that goes behind the chrome circular bezel of the ignition switch.  There are even three little indentations in the rubber or plastic that would match the dashboard lock tabs on the chrome bezel.

If the chrome is installed with the rubber or plastic missing, it's hard to notice.

Hi Tom,

My bad. I left out vital information...  this is a metal bearing.  Inside this there are 20+ metal ball bearings captured in thin steel covers.

Thanks,

Allen

It's the horn spring bearing; sits at the top of the column under the conical spring.

Sorry for my bad advice, Allen.  Once you said it was a bearing I remembered seeing one but could not remember where it was located.  I looked at your photo again and it still looks like a piece of rubber.  After stickandrudderman's post, it all came back to me.
