Under Dash Panels Templates LHD Link and pdf
« on: April 28, 2017, 08:07:12 »
Dear All,

I was looking for the templates on the forum, but it was hard to find them as a lot of the pictures are missing in Tech Manual and in the threads on our forum.

Let me provide a link I found on our forum (but it was quite difficult). In the thread there you will find LHD templates for older and new versions (they are in two posts). You need to register first. When you print, make sure that in the printer settings you do not have anything on like "fit to the page" or "shrink to fit page" - then you get 1:1 prints.

Pdfs attached (hope I am not infringing any patent rights).

I will make my panels of foam plate - I have no idea how it would work long term, but foam plate is much more rigid and lighter than any cardboard. I will then apply colour matching artificial leather on the bottom and additional felt or foam on the top. Wondering myself what I am going to get...

Original, as from factory, these panels were pressed sheets 4mm thick, and came in a limited number of colours (dark grey being the most common)

There are repro items readily available today from a number of vendors. Note that the panels differ between automatic and stick shift cars. The repro panel in this illustration also lacks ventilation hole (for air flow)

Yes, certainly - I studied all this. Up to everyone what they chose. With all due respect - the original are available in the form of USD 100 worth of piece of cardboard with black "pebble" pattern on one side - for you to cut, apply foam etc. Not worth it in my view.

The original originals, well, may dispute how they looked. Especially with those holes - I agree here with 66andblue.

The Niemoller or SLS pieces - ok, but they are around EUR 150-200 and come black. I think I would prefer the same looking material as upholstery, even though you merely see it, and a bit better soundproofing - that is why the decision to do those myself. Not to mention cost, which is about EUR 30. A bit more pain in the back, I suppose, as there is a bit more fitting to do.

And it creates ground for more bonding with the car, which is priceless.

The originals most likely had the large holes to promote air flow for the blower motor when in recirculation mode (fresh air flap closed). However there seems to be enough gaps around the edges for this.

Yes, correct, this is so. They are not old speaker holes  ;)

The holes also, as Pawel points out, are there to allow more warm air to reach feet area

If those were also meant to allow some hot air flow - I was thinking maybe to open some holes down in the feet area, where hot air is more wanted. You could finish them nicer with some kind of "grill". Bit I abandoned this idea.

I did not realize there was an air circulation function in Pagoda... ???

With the fresh air flap (blue arrow lever) closed, the blower motor is forced to scavenge its air from the bulkhead between the firewall and rear dash. These channels going left and right ultimately open up to the areas above the left and right kick panels.
The 2 large louvered vents on the dash (fresh air only) also open to this area. They will actually draw air into them when their respective levers and louvers are open, blower running, and the front fresh air flap is shut.

An illustration of W113 air flow; this is from M-B literature early descriptions of the 230 SL.
Top side drawing is ventilation air flow (fresh air)
Lower side drawing is air passing through heater element; heated air flow
A third mode would be what Tyler S describes, recirculation !

Just to comment on a little detail re. air flow in our Pagoda cars; the gap in the soft top fabric just behind the door (B pillar) is there to let the air escape out. This corresponds to the air passing out at the rear of the HardTop (see side drawings)

OK, done the panels, finished 2AM, but I sould not stop somehow until I finished. Not driven the car yet to check rattles and potential squeeks. Neither not sure how durable they will be, we will see.

I had to cut a bit the middle panel - steering column wes a bit in the way... could be that I made it too wide to cover the heater box on both sides.

Lot sof bonding with the car, lots of bending of my back...
