Mercedes Tools - different manufacturers
« on: May 01, 2017, 21:19:56 »
When I worked in a bicycle store at age 12 I became possessive about "my" tools and started to collect little wrenches from flea markets and garage sales finding that motorcycle tool kit wrenches were handy and cheap.   40 yrs later find that I still can't resist a good quality inexpensive wrench at a garage sale - especially if it is from Germany.   I never collected for the sale of collecting but rather to use, but as I get more and more wrenches and vintage tools I think the collecting thing is now more just for fun and the thrill of the hunt.   I started to sort through my car wrenches last night and realize I have no idea what year / make they came with.

Has anyone see a list of the manufacturers that would have produced various tools to go in various cars.   I have matador, dowidat, hazet, heyco etc.  but don't know which is correct for which year.  I also have some that say Ford, Yamaha, Fiat, Honda.

For the Benz car the most common are Hazet, Dowidat, Walter, Matador and Heyco. The screwdrivers are Felo, I believe. The pliers I have are Hapewe. I have seen each of those in various tool kits for the Pagoda. I don't think there was a set tool for a specific year. It was whatever was available. These tools were not specific to any particular vehicle so Benz would contract with various makers to get them tools, and they would put together the various kits. The bag was the more defining item, with the higher end cars having the nice snap bags.

I am assuming that the manufacturers would just stamp on the tool whatever marque they were selling to

Jon is right on about the choice of wrench manufacturers that came in the kit.  I have seen kits with just Dowidat, or Heyco.  I have not seen any Hazet open ended wrenches, but Hazet made all the spark plug wrenches and the 2760 Oil Service wrench.  Walter, to the best of my knowledge only made the 17mm/13mm after 1965 when Mercedes switched from 14mm to 13mm.  I believe that the wrenches (spanners for our friends in the UK) were in bins and randomly put into the kits.  Felo made the screwdrivers, and Heyco made the water pump pliers (Heyco 300).

Today, while trolling through ebay, saw a "UNIOR" open end wrench, with Mercedes Benz on the shank? Have never seen or heard of that one before.

It is a DIN 895, 17 mm X 14 mm

Open-end wrenches from Unior were one possibility in the tool kits... However I think they were included after the Pagoda era...(?) 1980-1990´s
Manufacturer situated in Slovenia, was founded in 1919.
