280 SL tool kit
« on: May 03, 2017, 15:27:57 »
Hi guys,

Newbee here with a 25 year long ownership of a´69 280 SL Pagoda, now trying to sort out individual tools in the kit, which there was none in the car when I bought it, except jack and tire chock.

Have browsed this old tool thread  https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=22.0, but haven´t been able to find any satisfactory detailed description/pictures of the individual tools to go after when I´m now trying to gather together the kit.

Anyone that can help? Will certainly be much appreciated.....

Dennis

The tech manual (available for full members) has a very good description of the tool kit. Breifly:

Two piece spark plug wrench
Four open end wrenches (noted in the link you had included in your post)
Plastic handle for screwdrivers (earlier cars had a wooden handle) the 280 SL should have the plastic one
Two inserts for the screwdriver handle (flat and cross)
Slip joint pliers (300 - with the MB star) - these are tough to find, you do not want the pliers with the part no. starting with 129
Fuse box assortment, with the the stubby 25 amp fuses
Regular pliers (Hapewe)

The black plastic fuse pullers are a cool add, but they were not part of the regular kit, they could be purchased separately

Thanks for the replies.

My problem as not being a full member, thus not having access to the manual is for instans and starting with the wrenches, they are almost never visible or pictured individually but mostly in their pouches so no way to see what marque or actual dimensions they are, and from what I´ve seen, it could be Mercedes Benz bright wrench (with MB star) # 19-17, but also 19-14, and what marques were in the 280SL pouch, Heyco, Dowidat, Matador or Unior?

As to the jack, I think I have the correct one.

No problems with the screwdriver.

Slip joint pliers, ok tough to find with the MB star, were there any others that would be correct, or half correct for the 280SL? Like Dovidat, Hazet or any other?

Dennis

Here is an alternative for the original style slip-joint pliers, these are the original size.

http://www.authenticclassics.com/Slip-Joint-Pliers-Mercedes-Heyco-300mm-p/auth-002523.htm

The wrenches (would all be chromed style for a 280 SL) could be from Matador, Dowidat or Hazet. As Hans has written, probably not from Unior.

(I will let me good friend Garry extol the many advantages to being a full member)

How correct is correct? I bought this complete set from my local MB dealer in 1970 for my 1969 280SL to replace a set stolen in shipment from the UK.  The slip joint pliers are Heyco but without star and 300 markings.  Now looking for a "correct" pair.  Everything else is up to snuff.  Wrenchs are Dowidat.

The wheel centering tool was not original to my car.  According to Pagoda Notes 11 No. 1, these were not supplied after Oct 1968. My car was built in Jan 1969.

And the reference for how we found the information about the wheel alignment tool deletion is from Engelen's Pagoda book.
