What year hardtop?
« on: April 28, 2003, 06:04:07 »
When I purchased my new project car, a 1970 280 SL, it came with an extra top.  I found that the top does not fit my car.  It seems to be a newer model.  The # on the top is 6296 and it has a pig tail with 3 pins on the passenger side.  It also has the pin in the rear center, which I believe is used for the soft top only on my car.  Any help as to what year this top would be for, or ways to find out would be helpful.

i recall that the california coupe version of the pagoda also uses a center locking pin below the rear window.

I wonder if it's for a '72-'89 350/450/etc SL.  Different from the W113 tops, but similar in overall shape.  My top has a two-pin pigtail on the driver's side and no center pin.

The window shape will help determine year of the top.
The later SLs, 1972 onwards had a window with vertical glass on the rear edge.
The W113 windows have a slanting rear edge.

70Chevelle,

When you say an extra top, do you mean you currently have 2 hardtops and 1 soft top?  As you likely know, the number on the hardtop should match your body number (last 3 digits should be the same as the digits on the hood and on the soft top cover.)

Best,

Yes, I have 2 hardtops and 1 softtop.  The hardtop that was physically on the car when I bought it and it matches the body number.  The #2 top doesn't.  I am going to sell the #2 top to generate some funds for reconditioning the car.  It seems that they have some value.  I just have to figure out exactly what year(s) it will fit.  The top itself is in very good condition.  It needs painted.  The chrome is pretty good.  It is all there, but some of the pieces have some dings.  The headliner is in very good condition, but the front seal to the windshield looks like it needs replaced.  I'll have to take a few pictures to post, maybe that will help you experts out there.

I looked at it closely and it must be for the '72 era.  The front of the rear windows are vertical as opposed to the top on my '70, which is slanted/angled.
