W113 250SL, engine starts, somethings doesn't start
« on: June 29, 2017, 08:53:32 »
I have my 250SL restored been loving it, however lately... i noticed some issues...
Car has been starting pretty good, except today where it suddenly stop starting.

see video :-

https://youtu.be/y1QIt0rhAzQ

First thought it was battery, trickle charge the battery.  Check voltage  = 13.4V...
So I havedecided to let it cool down couple of hours...

Started the car and it was roaring perfect..... drove around a little... no issues.

30 mins later, wanted to try to start again... same thing happened again..
Asked my restorer, he said ignition starter is brand new.

Any ideas?

Use the search function and search for "warm start". There are many reports on these problems, and solutions for them

Sounds like you have a bad connection to the starter motor - either at the battery, or the ground strap from the body to the engine.

I believe is what they called warm starting issues

Is there a fix already for warm start?

Have been reading but doesn't seems to have a solution

From your video, it's sounds like the engine is not turning over?  Not cranking?    If that is the case, it is different than the Warm Starting issue that many folks have with these car - where the engine turns over and cranks but does not start.     It sounds like car is not cranking when hot?

That's why I said bad connection, because you hear the click of the starter solenoid engaging, however the starter does not turn over as if it lacks power.

My ques is that the bearing clearance of the rotor is too tight. The rotor is stuck when the engine and the starter are warmed up. I have seen this kind of case before.

Is the starter solenoid being energised? Can you hear any clicking sound from starter when you turn ignition key to crank engine?  If not then most propably no current is getting to solenoid.  Check with a test light.  You should have battery voltage at the main on starter and battery voltage at solenoid upon turning key.

Turn on the headlights and try to start it. If the headlights go out, then it is a bad connection. If the headlights stay lit, it is something else. It could be the neutral safety switch, if it is an automatic. Try starting it in "N". Move the shifter while trying to start. If it is a manual transmission, try bumping the starter. Tap the starter, if the starter brushes are worn, a good jolt on the starter can temporarily restore its operation.
