what is the weight of an 280sl body
« on: August 28, 2017, 01:31:45 »
what is the weight of just the 280sl body without doors, hood, trunk? Building a dolly to place the body on to send to the sandblaster and paint shops, and want to make sure that it will be strong enough for transport on a care carrier.

It is lighter than you think.  700 lbs max and that is conservative.  I built a trailer for mine out of 2" x 2" by 1/4" wall square tube and it was overkill. I used the 4 jack points as mounting points for the chassis.  It's been from Minnesota to Detroit to Ohio to Minnesota with no issues.  The bigger the casters the easier the rolling.  Make sure you leave room for forklift forks between the body and the dolly if they are going to lift it at the sand blasters.

In that case 2 X 6's screwed at the corners (no nails) 4 big swivel casters from Home depot and under the middle run some 2 X 12's where the forks from a forklift can pick it up.

Yup, I did something similar. Also 2 x 2 x 1/4 with wheels in the corners, designed to fit my little trailer.

That is the way that I went. Need to drill the holes for the jack points mount them and install the cross members to connect both sides. The wheels I got from Harbor Freight with each having a 480 pound weight capability

I am sure you know what you are doing but to me the 2 x 4 over the distance shown, look a little weak. Also, you want to make sure that your jack points are sound. My jack points together with my rocker panels would not have been able to support the body. (Your body looks better than mine)

The planks you see are 2x6's and used angle steel to attach the vertical piece to the horizontal planks and then used 2x6 doubles for the wheels support. I think that should hold it for transport. The rocker panels have been removed and it appears that the jacking points is sturdy.
