Ignition Points
«

I want to replace my points and I'm having trouble finding the right set. Parts Geek and Autohaus specify these based on the engine number but I don't see my number in their reference or how to infer which set I need. My distributor is 0231116047 (cast iron) JFUR6. The engine number on the block (if I read it correctly) is 129010001. The car is a 1966 230SL Automatic.

Hey Harry,
Very interesting! You have got a very interesting distributor there.
The 047 is the predecessor of the very common 051 (0231 116 051), the dizzy that almost everybody else here has.
So, a typical vacuum retard unit !
The link to our WIKI that Pawel provided to you is absolutely correct.
There is also a list in further below on that page which indicates your distributor, and also the Bosch parts number for the points.
I am pretty confident that the points you need are identical with the ones for the 051.
The "EPC" therefore only lists two different points:
https://nemiga.com/cat_spares/epc/mercedes/1/m/127981/233/15/001/?chasis=113042249
or
https://www.ilcats.ru/mercedes/?function=getParts&class=1&catalog=249&aggtype=FG&model=113042&spmcatalog=233&spmaggtype=M&spmmodel=127981&group=15&subgroup=001&imageNo=3
A000 158 2090 and A000 158 0790.
I would guess you need the "later number", the 2090 but I am not sure since the list doesn't indicate properly.
"Modern" points are generally referred to as being of "poor quality" ....
My 2 cents, get good ones, the MB ones are supposed to be good!
Pricey though (3 times as much as on the aftermarket) but of better quality.
Cheers,
Achim

Thanks very much for the assistance. I also spoke with my local MB dealer and they were eventually able to give me the correct parts number for the points - 0001580790. I appreciate the help that I always get through the forum!

Stick with the original Bosch for best quality. Dealers will supply you with original equipment Bosch. You can also find some local Bosch dealers who can also supply you with Bosch points for much better prices. In most cases these dealers will request the distributor number. Typically the early non-transistorized ignition cars had the open ring (fork) connection on the points. Later cars with the transistorized factory ignition used the push-on spade connection on the points.
