Pre-Purchase Inspection in Las Vegas
« on: October 16, 2017, 16:04:19 »
Hello,

My name is David Martine and am a recent new full member to your great club.  I have been trolling here for some time and over the last few months have decided to jump in with both feet to pursue and purchase my first "Pagoda".   I have learned a tremendous amount on this site over my time here.  I have looked at, drove and inspected a few cars myself and have also had Tom Colitt inspect a car for me in California.  So far without success.

I will be inspecting a car in Las Vegas this week and while I'm fine with the visual aspects of the inspection, I was looking for someone to do a mechanical inspection - engine compression tests, check brakes, transmission, suspension, undercarriage, etc.  The local MB dealers will not do this and offer no suggestions.  I just thought I would throw this out to see if anyone knew a qualified shop (with knowledge of the 280SL's) that could handle this.

I will also be inspecting a 1968 280SL on Weds. that is at the Barrett-Jackson car auction Oct. 19th - 21st.  I am a registered bidder but am aware of the risks associated with an auction purchase.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Dave,

One recommendation i have is for you to contact members in the Nevada area to find out what shop or mechanic they use when issues arise.

If you click on the Members list and go to Page 48 you will see members in the Nevada area. Some of them are active in posting, others are not.

Go to this link ===> https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?action=mlist;sort=location;start=2350

It should take you to page 48.

I would if in your shoes send some of the members an e-mail (you just click on the mail envelope and post a message) and check what shop or mechanic they use. It might even be that one of them might help you out who knows.

If all fails search the area for BMW, Porsche or European car repair shops and see if they would help you out.

Good Luck,

Dieter

Hi Dieter,

Thank you for the information.  I will check the Nevada folks to see who they have work on their cars.  I have also goggles around looking at German/European garages to see what is out their.

Again, thank you for your assistance.

Hi Dave,

My pleasure, I send you a follow up PM. Check your mail.

When I was driving older BMW's and older Mercedes's in the past I never had work done at Dealerships for obvious reasons. I found the European Repair Shops fine since they always had Mechanics from the OEM Dealerships on staff.
