Where to get body panels for 280SL
« on: November 30, 2017, 22:11:13 »
Where to get body panels for 280SL? After having sand blasted the body have come to the sad realization that there is so much bondo laid over rusted areas and new rust damage that it gives me doubt about trying to save the body.

I would always check MB first. In my experience the panels fit better, feel better and look better. However, not all panes are available from MB and they are definitely more expensive.
For aftermarket sheet metal, I like SLS out of Germany. Very fast shipping, no taxes and the quality is good.
There is also K&K out of Sparta, MI, which a lot of members seem to like.
Personally, I had no luck with the polish vendor listed in the tech manual.
Hope that helps to get you started.

It should be noted that K&K supplies floor pans and other repair panels to SLS along with other vendors around the globe.

Yes, I remember you mentioned that in another thread before and if that's the case, I guess all that matters is price and delivery.

Try contacting MB classics direct... I've had best luck with this gentleman below. Very helpful and pricing is competitive to many other vendors, with obvious quality and provenance assurance

I agree you should check with MB first. I purchased some parts from K&K. Nice thing was on the right rear we replaced the quarter from just below the crease. On the left rear we just needed a patch panel to the rear of the wheel arch. K&K got the parts delivered promptly and they had just the portions of the areas we needed to remove. The shop was very pleased.

I had, even though expecting it to some degree, a similar experience when all the paint and body filler was off. Are you planning on doing the bodywork / welding yourself?
As Chris already pointed out, Jon Siggson from the mb classics center helped me also quite a bit when it came to quoting and pricing.

Good luck

No I'm going to get the pros to do this because there is going to be a lot of cutting and welding that will be required.

So much of the car's sheetmetal is available I am actually surprised no one is selling complete replacement bodies yet.
