Alternator terminals

The wiring diagram shows red to B+,    red and blue  to D+   which is ok. Iam left with  a  positive spade conector and the stud on the case of the alternator.  Which terminal for the brown or black?

Also which route should the wires from the alternator to the starter motor take?

The large ring terminal on the end of the red braided wire, attaches to the back of the alternator (the larger stud). It feeds power to most of the electrical system and recharges the battery. The small lug on the case of the alternator is ground. A separate, small, bare, braided wire attaches to it. With the original alternator you should not have a spade connector? I assume yours is a 230SL which is different from the later W113 alternators.

Thanks Joe for your response. From the attached photo can you tell me where the the thin black cable attaches. It doesn't have an end terminal. (1965 230sl.)

This is not the original  alternator. This alternator has an internal voltage regulator. Wiring has been changed a bit, but should work fine. The black wire needs to have a slip-on spade connector then it will plug in the D+
