Graphite Grey Carpet
« on: February 07, 2018, 14:05:24 »
I was unable to resurrect an old thread from 2010 (https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=13318.msg90592#msg90592) so am starting a new one.  It has been quite a few years since this was discussed and before I pull the trigger on a new carpet I thought I would ask the members if anyone still has their original graphite grey carpet interior.  This would most likely have been in a white (717) car with a blue (115) MB Tex or leather interior.

The GAHH site referenced in the previous thread is dead.  The sample picture (first post of previous thread) is the same as that shown on the German Auto Tops site (https://www.germanautotops.com/mercedes-benz-w113-1963-1971-230sl-250sl-280sl-carpet-kit).  Graphite grey to me illicits an image of a very dark grey but the lighter grey seems to be what others have selected so I thought I would try once more to see if anyone has an original graphite grey interior.  Thanks.

Here are the actual Mercedes carpet sample sheets that were sent to me by Veteran last month. I'm told they are the main US supplier for everybody (gahh, GAT,  etc)

Thanks.  However you will note there is more than one grey, similar to GAT's site.  Which one is closest to graphite grey, or maybe it is an entirely different shade?  That's what I'm trying to determine before I select a grey colour.

There were two different types of carpet, square weave for the 230 and 250's and the multiloop for the 280.
So be sure you get the correct one for your SL, which is unknown.
Oops, I see you have a 230SL-sorry old eyes not working well.

Don't forget to call or email the suppliers and ask for samples of the colors you are considering. I have found that all the suppliers, GAHH, GAT, Heritage, WorldUP and source their carpet from the same supplier.

Looks like this car is for sale in the Classic Center:

https://www.facebook.com/MBClassicCenter/

It has the carpet 6117. Maybe this gentleman we e-mail or call there can help you? He is a very helpful person.

Pawel, nice catch, thank you.  I will get in touch with the Classic Center and see which carpet they used and their reasoning for selecting that colour to represent graphite grey.  I'll report back.

Marcus,
perhaps I am missing something. Does your car no longer have the original "graphite grey" (= 6117?) carpet?
If that is the case then the owners of the original Mercedes carpet sample book might be able to help you. I believe we have some members here who have that extremely rare book.

If you want it exactly the way it was and you can find a sample there is a guy who will dye white carpet to any custom color.  Get ahold of Alex D here.  He knows the entire process.  He has an Aqua interior and ended up researching the heck out of it before he found "The guy".

You are correct Alfred, I do not have the original carpet in the car.  It is more blue/grey, certainly not graphite grey.  Hence my quest for someone that has the original carpet still installed or maybe someone with an original carpet samples book could post some pictures.  I didn't realise anyone had an original carpet book but that would work as well.  I could then at least gauge the colour better.

Marcus:

I have graphite in my '70, but of course it is loop...

The trouble with dyeing is graphite is a combination of black and gray - in mine at least.

You might check with www.cabrio.de - they seem to have an example of the square weave graphite.

Thanks Rick.  I checked out their square weave and again they have charcoal (rough and fine) and grey.  The fine looks to be closer to the original but just don't know about the shade of grey.  Still waiting to hear back from the Classic center.

I know it's a long shot for someone to have an original interior so hoping someone with an original carpet book can post some pictures.  If someone knows of someone with an original carpet book, hopefully they can get them to post.

Still haven't heard back from the Classic Center.  Unusual as they are always good at responding pretty quickly, even just to say they are looking into it.

Still hoping someone with an original carpet book can post some pictures (just need them to read this thread).  Given up on someone having an original interior, so next best thing.

Classic Center did not install the carpet on the car for sale so have asked if they can contact the owner and let me know.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

I don't know if my carpet is graphite in an original interior '67 250 SL.  It's Caviar Tex interior.

John, Your carpet is the same as my 250 SL. (Black 6125). It is mostly black fibers mixed with a little grey. My carpet has faded a bit to a brownish color like yours. I will post a picture of a piece from under the seat that retains its original unfaded appearance.

John and Tyler, thanks for looking.  Your carpets however have too much brown in them.

I've attached a copy of the best photo showing the carpet in the car that the MB Classic Center is selling that is apparently graphite grey.  I'm hoping the owner of the car will disclose to the Classic Center where they sourced it from.

Marcus, Here is an old listing for a 250sl with the same color combo you are looking for. They sourced the (Graphite Grey) carpet from World Upholstery. Though the counts per inch does look a little off to me.

My 250 is 717 white & blue MB tex.   My carpet has been replaced by previous owner but was told it matches what originally was there - but can't tell you definitively.   So not sure if this helps.  In the pile of docs for this car, I don't have any receipt for carpet.    The last owners did almost everything at the dealer including tires.  This was probably replaced in the 1980's.

Here are shots of the carpet in sunlight.

Oz, thank you, those photo's are great.  I copied the second one and then jumped back and forth between it and the one for sale by the Classic Center.  The colours are very close.  Your weave looks tighter than the one from the Classic Center and probably more correct as I understand the original was 6-7 weaves per inch.

I don't know if the colour has faded at all and am asking if you can look at the carpet under your seat and see if it is the same shade  as the piece in your centre console and parcel self.  Again, thanks for posting those photo's.

Marcus,

I had these photos in my computer.  I am in California at the moment but the 250 is in Storage about 90 miles away.  I won't have chance to get to it for about 2 weeks.   That will probably be too late for you.

Hi Marcus,

If you can get a small sample of the original unfaded, you can get a white carpet and get it dyed, even if has some black, or dark blue fibers in it. After 4 years of searching for turquoise, getting a custom dye formulated, and white German Square Weave carpet and dying was the only way I could get an exact match.  Not cheap, and does take some time, but it can be done, all you need is a sample of unfaded original carpet.

Marcus,

I have not had the opportunity to get to the 250 and need to return to France.   However, I know the car storage guy very well and I asked him to take a look for me.  He pulled the car into the sun and looked into the foot wells and under the seat and tells me that there is no noticeable difference from the carpet on the parcel shelf.  He says the color and shade look the same to him.

This makes sense since the car is rarely in the sun open except when I am driving and the last owners had not removed the hardtop for over 15 years, maybe more.

Best,

Marcus,

This is late, but I finally was back in California was able to get to the 250 in storage today.  Here are photos of carpet areas not exposed to sun.   Looks same as areas that were exposed.   Ignore the dust and dirt.
