Turn Signal Instal help
« on: February 09, 2018, 00:12:33 »
I have a new turn signal switch from the Mercedes classic center to instal. It is the complete mechanism. Turn signal with the wire and connector. My original would not cancel.
Asking for any key steps I should do to make the replacement go easier.
Much appreciate any tips.
Thanks
David

Referred to here as the steering column multiswitch, you will find what you are looking for in the technical manual. You should plan on removing the 12 pin connector cover to feed it through the steering column. If you remove the steering column for any reason, read the cause of the damage to the cancellation feature in the tech manual.

It is relatively straightforward job.

David,

There is loads on this in the Technical manual here on site.( Steering column multi function switch)
Also search for posts on "Indicator Stalk Replacement" around April last year.

My best offerings are
1) Remove the connector, and make a torpedo of the pins with a rubber glove finger & tape
2) Have a good chiropracter in your contacts list !

Have fun,
No problem really

Paul and Frank thanks for the tips. I did go to the Technical manual but it didn’t click that you would remove the plug. Kept thinking you would need remove wire from turn signal.
I’ll be getting it done this weekend. Need to get the cold weather projects done before spring!!

Twist the plug with the tape wrapped to hold wire pins in place, but you might want to make a note with the wires and colors and locations before taping, so you are covered if the tape and plugs fall apart.
Twist the plug a bit at an angle to slide down the inside of the steering column.
Patience and you will get it.
Steering wheel should be removed(cover and 5 nuts)
Also two horn wires(brown and black are held to switch stalk with small bladed screws.

The instal was pretty straight forward. I took the cover off the plug and that allowed enough room to slide through the steering column with little effort. I did not have to pull the wires out. Just put the cover back on and plugged it in.
Nice to have this done and have the canceling feature on my car.
Thanks for the comments

Hi David,
The stearing columb on the later models(250/280SL) is larger than the ones on the 230SL and the early 250SL.
Dont ask me how I know.
