Proper Hose Clamps
« on: April 05, 2018, 01:00:01 »
My car has a collection of worm drive clamps with the occasional "as delivered clamp".  I would like to change them out to the original style but cannot locate a local source.  Can you recommend a source (affordable preferred) for the original overlapping band with 2 tabs cinched with a nut and bolt?

Take a look here: http://www.authenticclassics.com/NOS-Original-Screw-type-Hose-Clamp-13mm-size-p/auth-004314.htm
He has many of the required Norma clamp sizes.

 Tom,
Clamp styles went through a couple evolutions.  What year is your car?

The 280’s originally had Gemi clamps but they are no longer available.  The Norma clamps are the best substitute.  Essentially the same clamp but with a slotted screw as opposed to the phillips pan head on the original Gemi.

It is very easy to change the screw type. I just ordered a bag of the phillips head style screw from McMaster-Carr (US supply house for all kinds of small bits and pieces).

The Gemi clamp also has a different type clamp set-up. I did go back and clean it up to see if I could raise the information on the clamp itself. I was able to read it, but not get a readable photo. It is stamped "Gemi" and "18"

See photo attached.

If I remember correctly, Peter Lesler at one time offered packages of correct hose clamps for the Pagoda cars.

Pete Lesler took ill a couple of weeks ago, and is recovering. So, if anyone contacts him don't expect an answer for some time.

Gemi and Norma are now owned by the same company.  Maybe someday they will make a new die and stamp out some Gemi’s again.  Such a small production run it probably doesn’t make sense but it would be nice if they did.

I talked to Norma directly. I thought I would buy some clamps we find on eBay or in Authentic Classic directly from them. No problem, I would just have to order 100pcs per size minimum and the price was roughly EUR 1.5 per pc.

By the way: personally I found the Norma clamps a nightmare to install. You really need to watch the direction the screw is facing and you really need to get the diameter right as the span of dimensions  for these clamps is minimum. I thought of putting in the philips screws - but then it becomes neither Norma nor Gemi...

I like to use the phillips screw type as they are a bunch easier to tighten/loosen, for me anyway.

I ordered screws on Amazon the other day.  If I recall correctly the judging standard is original or whatevr Mercedes supplies.  That being said I have heard another standard is as long as the clamps match and are not American worm clamps.  I figure Normas with phillips still match and look closer to Gemis.

In trying to find the correct screw presents a challenge. The screw size appears to be 4mm-.7 x 20mm for all of the hose clamp sizes I have. It should be a "cheese head" and with a smaller diameter head than a standard pan head screw. That is the problem. The most common cheese head screw is a slotted head, not a Phillips drive. The closest I could find is:

https://www.belmetric.com/4mm-c-10_74_1343_1349_1354/mspsh4x20clz-small-head-jis-zinc-p-8205.html At least the head diameter and drive is correct. For the ones who bought these, what did you find?

Here are the screws I bought.  They look good.  I will snap a pic of one in the clamp tomorrow.
