Success at last!  On 1/14/05 listed the filters-so it was the first one in the tank inside the Shroud of Fuelin.  Used the inch or so bolt hex head to get the filter out of the bottom of the tank.  Took a 15" pipe wrench to loosen it.   Thought it was going to bend the tank!

Hello Rodd,
I believe the early original tank screens were brass. The later and replacements were plastic.

If your filter is the original brass  and is still in good shape, stay with it.
 The plastic replacements do not have as fine a screen and they can not be torqued well before they crack.

Just a final, final posting on this matter. I can definitely vouch for the fact that the problem is solved! 2 tankfuls, both run well into the warning light area, and it's running better than ever! Are all SLs as sweet as an original 230 running within the power band? And never less than 22mpg...
