Difficult to adjustvalve lash. 280sl
« on: May 12, 2018, 16:52:16 »
One of the 17mm size pedestal adjusters was rounded off by a previous owner. Is there an easy way to remove that rocker without removing much else. I just completed head installation, complete with cam timing chain etc, any suggestions greatly appreciated

With the offending rockers valve closed, you can insert an allen wrench into the oiling hole of the rocker and use it to lever the rocker up and off of the ball stud. There is also a tool available for this but can get pricey for just a one time use.

I've used a large screwdriver to depress the valve so the rocker can slide out.  You could try grinding down the adjuster post to 14 mm but probably better to get a replacement.

Take the rocker off and use a socket to break the ball stud loose. It's probably stuck which is why it was chewed up before you got there.

Make sure the cam for the given rocker is up so the valve is not depressed. You take the allen No.5. Grab it by the longer end. Insert the shorter end into the oil hole in the rocker. Lift the longer end you hold in your hand. When you have the rocker end above the adjuster's ball, move it to the side. Now te rocker is free.

Using the number 5 allen made this a very simple job. I was able to use a socket on the offending adjustment nut to get just the lash called for. Thanks very much for the assist.
