Fuel Pump (Short) Filter
« on: July 01, 2018, 19:35:54 »
My car has recently started showing issues that, as per this forum, are fuel starvation symptoms (without being, however, 100% sure). I need to go through all necessary steps. I have a question: is the fuel pump filter available as a replacement part? I cannot find information on tihis...

If you are talking about the internal filter on the short pump it is pretty robust usually you can just clean them if you take them out it takes a 27 mm wrench and a lot of torque it will come out along with a crush ring I do suggest replacing the crush ring when you put the cleaned filter back on otherwise I believe authentic Classics does sell that filter but I don't have the part number handy

Pawel,
This is what the (dirty) filter looks like. As Bob says, it should be cleanable once removed.

Thank you!

I am thinking about the situation when the filter is not there...

If it is there - I will certainly try to clean it. Thank you for the 27mm socket info. I read it may take an impact wrench.

Just looked at Authentic Clasic it is there for early pump only.

Thank you for your kind advise!

I have seen where that happens and whoever took it apart the screen was so bad that instead of trying to soak and clean it they just tore it off. The screen itself is plastic so you need to use a cleaner that will not destroy the plastic. I have had good luck with soaking it in a bath of Tuff Stuff I don't know if that is available by you but it's a foam cleaner that is safe for plastic that and some gentle wiping on the inside usually brings them very clean if for whatever reason you cannot find one let me know I'm sure I've got some good used ones Bob

Bob, thank you!
Tuff Stuff is not here, but I am sure my wife (who knows everything) will suggest some cleaner that will not affect plastic. I am curious to see what I have there.
I suspect the flower pot inlet hole under return line inside the tank the most. But I will go through the exercise step by step and check all the filters that are there, following the 1l/15sec from return first.

Thanks for advise again!

I cleaned ours this winter, I used a small flat screw driver to carefully loosen the debris inside the filter. It was bad. Cleaned up fine. I used lacquer thinner to cut the varnish. Plastic mesh was fine with the thinner. I was doing a full fuel system cleaning, in the process of getting a long sitting car back on the road. Still in process. Getting there.

I would probably be afraid of thinner because of plastic - but if you say it worked... would most likely check various options carefully - how they interact with plastic. My first thought would be some household chlor based cealner, but I could be wrong.

Since we are talking about it, how is the filter unit attached to the aluminum housing? Or better, how can it be taken apart?

What I know form forum, not been through it myself: it is in the inlet fitting. It takes 27mm socket and most likely impact wrench to undo it and pull out.

The plastic filter is identical for both the new and old style pump. It is a press fit into the inlet assembly and should pop off with a little vit of pulling and squeezing around the base.

Thanks
I tried, but was worried of breaking the plastic housing.

Ot will pop off with a little coaxing. Just make sure you grip it at the base and not the top. Wiggle it back and forth while at the same time pulling at the base.

I installed an inline fuel filter between the tank and the pump. Metal housing, 1/2" hose fittings, Napa Gold 3248.   It provides a lot better quality filtering than the screen in the pump and will hold a whole lot more "stuff" before clogging.

My tank and pump (filter) were LOADED with varnish. I had a few gallons of thinner in the tank for WEEKS with chunky bolts to loosen the crud. Point is, the thinner cut the varnish. The plastic of the screen survived. I had the pump apart several times, cleaning more gunk out each time.

I would probably be afraid of thinner because of plastic - but if you say it worked...

I second the inline filter between the tank and the pump.  NAPA use to have a clear plastic one so was easy to check for debris.

I keep an extra in-line filter in the trunk.  If it starts to plug up because of tank gunk, It is only a 5 min job to replace and very easy to get to.

Ok, so my conclusion my car had fuel starvation issue proved to be correct.

The aditional filter between the tank and fuel pump was clogged. I am now looking for a filter with 10mm fittings rathr then popular 8mm fittings.

More to that: I have no filter in the fuel pump. Since none of you said anything that would suggest that late pumps might have come wihout the inner screen, I assume I should have it and I am missing it.

I will post on wanted to buy before I get to Authentic Classic.

Plain rubbing alcohol does a good job of cleaning the varnish off the screen. It does not hurt the plastic. It does not have to be 100% alcohol. Even the rubbing alcohol with 10-30 % water content works fine. I have better luck with this than lacquer thinner, carb cleaner, brake clean, injector cleaner etc.

I looked through the posts and early Technical Manual content. I know this is not discovering America, but a short wrap up may help those who look for it in the future. Joe was sharing this knowledge many years ago wiht us  :).

It looks like the difference between the inlet fittings and screens in long and short pump is the diameter of the fitting thread and socket you need for them (short 27mm, long 22mm). Screen is the same. It should be possible to remove screen from one and attach it to the other. But I read some of you destroyed the screen while trying to do that, so there is a risk associated with this activity.

I was digging through the internet, but the only place I found this screen is Authentic Classic - they have the one for long pump. As I need the other one (for short pump) and as this piece from Authentic Classic would cost me way over $100 with risk of damage on transferring the screen to my fitting, I was hoping perhaps one of you has one for short pump for sale. Or can direct me to a source...

Hi,
does anybody know the size of this seal ring? It looks like aluminum and should be replaced.
I found this size:  22 x 18 x 1.5  mm (N007603018100).

Perhaps this may help. The seal rings are there.

I checked the Bosch number of the outlet fitting/valve from the enclosed part list and it corresponds to MB PN A0000910710, which is outlet fitting/valve for the long pump. So if the number from Bosch list of parts of short pump yields MB number for long part, it may mean outlet fitting is the same. This I confirmed checking the Bosch spare part list for long pump - the outlet fitting/check valve is the same on both types of pumps.

This means that the note in the EPC under PN A0000910710 saying "Up to ident. no. 044 010241" is wrong. It fits all types.

The seal ring number you provided will fit oulets in long and short and inlet in long.

But I cannot find MB PN for Bosch 31374343000, which is the inlet fitting for short pump (from the enclosed list).
