It's getting quiet in here
« on: July 31, 2018, 07:33:13 »
The forum seems quieter than in the past. Yet we seem to have more members.
I wonder if the numbers back this up.
I also wonder if people are supplementing here with things like Facebook groups - the one popping up on my newsfeed is largely pics of shiny cars from all over the place- and whether the liveliness of the forum is being impacted as a result. That or everyone has their car sorted OR is using the search and realise all questions have been answered somewhere  ;)

Just an observation

FB has BADLY eroded the car forums that I enjoy. Its really too bad, as the info posted, does not remain, and be able to accessed later. Too bad for me, as I dont use FB.

When I accessed this forum this AM I was greeted by 21 new messages since yesterday which is the most I've seen for some time. Daily participation varies, but I have not noted a long term decrease here, quite unlike the moribund MBCA website.

I'm sure there analysis that can be done to show the trends. The other explanation though is that we've really exhausted all there is to know and share; it's all documented. I know, never!

We should also remember that it is vacation time and quite a few members are not at home.

I too feel like traffic isn’t what it was.  I especially miss seeing the “I just bought this car and i’m trying to get it running.” Threads.  Maybe the backyard mechanics of which I was one are getting priced out of our cars but what worries me is the occasional snarky comment that I see whenever someone tries to do something that isn’t original or correct or isn’t up to the commenters standards.  Maybe I am wrong but The increase in members and reduction in traffic may be due to people who follow along but may be intimidated to say anything for fear of bring called out.

The really frequent posters here are a fairly knowlegable group with years of experience under their belts and although this group is by and large a really accommodating group I could see where a newcomer might be intimidated.  If you add the occasional snarky comment it just make it worse.

For those of you that think "all of the questions have been answered", I have a challenge for you.
I'm trying to figure out if a 1970 280 SL, built in August of '69 with a 245 blue leather interior is supposed to have dark blue or black (dark grey) rubber on the door sill threshold.
Please see post: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=27900.msg201127#msg201127   if you can help.

Also,

why not start some interesting threads like,,,,,

What is your Daily Driver?

What is your Dream Car?

What is the most interesting story about your Pagoda?

Will you ever sell your Pagoda? if so when?

What was the longest trip with your Pagoda?

If you think it is too quiet in here keep in mind we are getting new members all the time those Members might first try to familiarize themselves with our site. You can help those Members by using this sites "Search" function. For example, I searched "Daily Driver" ---> https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?action=search2 In doing so I got 12 pages of posts on the subject. Perhaps you see one you like to give a Bump by reviving it so some of the new Members can see it. I did revive one I came across "What's your Profession" and it resulted in several replies to that topic. Bottom line, we can help it along if we want too.

Questions like this I think will also be responded to by Members that don't like to ask technical questions. Can you think of any other topics? Let us start some of them then it won't be that quiet in here :)

What say you?

Good idea? Bad idea?

Dieter

PS.  Look how many replies and or hits stories like "New Member Introduction" or "What have you done to your Pagoda today?" just to name a few.

Right on, last year this time I was in Holland and Germany for 4 weeks in July .... can't wait till September for my 2 week trip to the South of France driving a 250SL Standard around the F1 track ... trying to contact Nico Rosberg perhaps he will join us with his pagoda what a treat that would be :) well a fellow can hope, Nico is a real down to earth person so it might be possible who knows :)

Hi folks...

here is your tech geek a.k.a. honorary member with the low-down. Only trust the numbers, as I say. You can always access these here:

https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?action=stats

but I've prepared a quick run down for you (see attachment). Posts this July are up from July 2017. However, July is typically our slowest month. Nothing to worry about. Move along now, and be merry!

...trying to contact Nico Rosberg perhaps he will join us with his pagoda what a treat that would be :) well a fellow can hope, Nico is a real down to earth person so it might be possible who knows :)

Some years ago, I managed to call, at his home, Bruno Sacco, and asked him if our local MB Club could throw him a party, when he was going to be in Detroit for his induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame. While initially taken aback, he did warm up but informed me in the kindest possible manner, that MB was supplying him "handlers", and that [in terrific Teutonic tradition] every moment would be accounted for.  So, OK, I said, and left him my phone number "just in case he had a spare few minutes, maybe we could meet for coffee or something".

A week before the event I got a call from Mercedes Benz PR in the USA and they said "Mr. and Mrs. Sacco will be available for your party on Thursday night next, between the hours of 5PM and 10PM. We will supply you with a car to transport them to and from your event. He will be staying at the Ritz Carlton in Dearborn."

And that's where I learned to put on a first class event in 7 days. Dinner was at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, Commodore's Room, and dessert reception at MB of Saint Claire Shores, in their showroom.

The S550 was a nice ride.  ;)

So, don't be surprised if you actually get to Nico, if you get an affirmative...but you have to ask!
