Radius arm location cones.
« on: July 31, 2018, 23:29:32 »
Hi All.  I am replacing the two rear radius arm mounting cones on the new floors of my '64 230SL.  Old floors were a rusty mess with several well-bodged earlier repairs, so I cannot rely on any dimensions.  Centre distance appears to be 875 mm but I can't be sure.  I know that some of you great restorers will have done this job, but I cant find anything on 'search'.  Can anyone confirm this dimension ?
Also, the 'square' hole in the point of the triangular closing cover on the cones - can someone tell me how this is arranged?  Captive nut?  Floor stud?  A photo would be brilliant.  with thanks, PerryM

Hi Perry,
I replaced my floors as well. However, I don't understand quiet yet what you are looking for. Can you post a picture of the area? What do you mean by rear radius arm?

I am guessing you are referring  to the trailing arms?   The ones which mount to a bolt in the body and they attach to the differential.  Take a look at this and see if this is what you are looking for.

The factory "Technical Data Passenger Cars" booklets have all this precise information in exact dimensions. Look in "Control Drawing for Frame Floor Unit". 1966 issue has the 230SL information on page 430

Thanks folks - Rick, you are correct in that I do mean the trailing arms.  Setting tool you indicated would give the dimension I am after as 877 mm from cone centre to centre.  Problem solved!  Does anyone have details of the fixing for the 'square' hole in the tip of the triangular closing/mounting bracket on the cone?  I assume some type of captive nut to a bolt in the floor?  Can't see any details on SLS graphic.
