manual transmission popping out of 2nd gear

Hello All

I have a 1969 280 SL, 4 speed manual transmission.  I Just had a completely  rebuilt transmission put in (rebuilt gears, shaft etc) and it is running great except that is sometimes "pops" out of second gear when I am driving downhill (I live in CA) without my foot on the accelerator......any thoughts on this??

Hello Dan,
There is a slim chance it could be linkage. Possibly the shifter rod going into the tranmission is not moving forward far enough to fully engage second gear all the time. There is a  splined slip joint just behind the tranmission cover on the main linkage rod. This can be loosened and adjusted so the rod is a bit longer for more reach in gears 2 and 4. You will have to remove the tunnel carpeting  and the metal shifter cover to access this slip joint. Extending the length an 1/8" should do fine.

Be sure all your shifter bushings are in good shape while you are in there.

If this is not the problem let us know and we will go to the next step.

Dan,

Does the rebuilder have a warranty on their parts and labor?  I would assume that if this was "just done" that you could simply drive the car back to them and have make the proper adjustment for no cost.

My first guess would be the bushings.  Same thing was happening with my Toyota truck at one time.
