Oil for the fuel inhection pump

Our 1968 280SL has  s separate oil supply for the injection pump. It has the red filler knob on the top. How much oil does the pump take. I couldn't see any oil in the pump and I put in 1/2 litre and it started to overflow at the back.

The fact that there is no response to this question, makes me wonder....
Is there a separate oil supply for the injection pump? I don't see this on my motor.

There isn't. This system is designed to continually drain back into the crank case as the engine is running. Sometimes the drain will get plugged and oil will start to come out the top of the IP. Regardless of system type, this is never a good thing.

But should Doug's 280 sl's injection pump have a red filler cap on it? Sounds like an older type pump, no?

The R18 pump was the last to use a self contained oil supply (for the governor section) fill cap, and dip stick. It was replaced by the R20 in early 68. All pumps used an oil feed line from the engine to lubricate the piston portion of the pump.

Do you think there's a possibility that Doug's car has the wrong pump installed? It wouldn't be the first time I've seen that.

That 68 model year is goofy as far as what was installed vs what is supposed to be installed. If someone has the Pagoda Notes with M.Y. changes for 68 it may list when the pump was changed to R20. But yes its possible the wrong pump is installed. The oil line would have also needed to be replaced as its longer on the R20 and installs in a different location on the pump.

I looked over the Pagoda Notes for 1968 changes.  I didn't  see any mention of the FIP change over.

Perhaps if the OP posts his vin number we could try to isolate if it's an early 68 or late and go from there.

It is tied to the new type engine in the 280SL /8; the M130E.
Like Tyler writes this engine was equipped with a new type FI pump

My w111 has the old model pump R11 which I fill up the oil manually and it take about 300ml , but the one on my 280sl pagoda 1969 R20 the oil come from the  engine direct .

It’s seem someone fix the wrong pump on your car , but if it running fine you Must keep it because they are very difficult and expensive to find ...

There is a t-handle dipstick that you unscrew at the very back of the pump.  It will show you the level.  Feel around.
