Data Card Found - Is It Yours?
« on: September 10, 2018, 03:25:37 »
I recently purchased 280SL set of owner manuals on eBay and with it got the original data card (#2) for 113.044 12 014261
(#2) - where key codes were punched-out/not visible.

If anyone here owns that car, please send me a PM with your address, so I could mail you the data card.
Thanks.

Many may not be familiar with our registry:

https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Registry/Start

It is sortable by column. The vin for the datacard you found is not included unfortunately (the closest one is 4 numbers higher). Everyone is encouraged to add their car's info to the registry.

Cees,

I sorted the registry by VIN # the above VIN is not visible in the database as you can see from the screenshot.

Perhaps the owner of the car may see the original post.

Does anyone know how to amend the data in the registry - I noticed I have an extra 0 in my serial number.    Should be 113044100146XX instead of three 0s.

Hi Igor,

I have never seen an actual original data card.  I only have a copy of mine from the Classic Center and seen pictures of them on the forum and in the Technical Manual.  Could you tell me what is the height and width of the actual card?  If the size of the data cards is listed in the Technical Manual, I missed it.  I would like to print my data card copy out stiff heavy paper and get the size right.

Thanks,

Rich

Rich, I am not with my car right now so I can’t provide the measurements.  I am sure someone will chime in.

I wanted to point out that the corners are rounded and there is additional text printed in the margins of the card.  This text may or may not be visible on your copy and it varies from my  number 1 to my number 3 card (my number 2 card has been lost).  Zoom in on attached photo to see details.  I do not know the significance of the printed matter but “Hummel” may have been a contractor suppling the cards.

Richard, I don't know how old you are but if you ever worked with computers and programming 40+ years ago you probably would have been using punch cards to run the programs.  Those cards were I believe the same size as the data cards.

Yes, the data cards are the same exact size as the 1970s "Lochkarte", an 80-punch data carrier, which had a special reader. The actual dimensions are 187mm ( 7-3/8) long and 83mm (3-1/4) wide with rounded edges of a 6mm radius

Ralph, Marcus, and Mike,

Thank you for the information on the data card.  I am going to scan the copy of the data card I was mailed from the Classic Center years ago and try to adjust the size of the image to fit on card stock that is 7-3/8  by 3-1/4.  Then I will try to do the same for the reverse side of the data card using the image in our Technical Manual or maybe something online.  If you Google "mercedes datenkarte" or "mercedes data card" a lot of images are available but it is impossible to judge the size of the card; so your measurements are very helpful.  It also appears that early Pagoda data cards may not have had the 6mm radius corners as later cards clearly do; but I am not sure about this.

Rich,
Look at Ralph's (neelyrc) pictures. He is clearly showing us that some of the Pagoda data cards DID have rounded corners. Those pictures are from his original owner Pagoda. Thanks Ralph !!

Iconic,

No question that 280SL Data Cards have rounded corners.  They are clearly visible on Ralph's images.  I believe, however, 230SL Data Cards had square corners.  There are lots of images online of early 60's Mercedes non-W113 Data Cards which also do not have rounded corners.  See attached 230 Sedan Data Card.

Also, our Technical Manual lists four variations of the Cards for the entire Pagoda run but it looks like there are more variations.  Take a look at the attached image of a 230SL Data Card.  This Data Card is a cross between Ver.1 and Ver.2.  Notice that some of the print is in a blue color and the card itself is more white than tan.  Do you think it is original or a reproduction?

No, Richard,
that's correct.
In the same way as for the 280 (e.g. Ralph's car)
there were "several" datacards for the 230 SL. ;)

I have seen real ones in yellow cardboard and "white ones" with colored (.i.e blue) inscriptions.
Both exist. 8)
And yes,
there are differences between the (230) datacards - depending on year of manufacture. ???

Best,
