Coolant Tank Bracket
« on: September 24, 2018, 17:52:23 »
I've almost gotten my 280SL ready to leave the garage after 23 years, but now have a broken coolant tank bracket that snapped off while working on the engine. Is this the original bracket that someone hastily tried to reweld  to the engine bay and is there a MB part number for a replacement bracket?

I could be wrong and others will correct me if I am but I believe the 280SL did not come with a coolant bag bracket.  Some have added one as you find them on the 230SL.

I don't recognize that bracket.  Are you talking about the coolant expansion tank on the right side of the car?

the coolant expansion tank is on a pretty stout stand.  Is it possible you are referring to the windshield washer reservoir that is stuffed between the relays and the brake booster?  If so they didn't have a bracket after 1969 so someone could have tried to make on I guess.

This is the coolant tank that I'm now having a problem attaching inside the engine bay. Since the tacky little weld that was used to support the makeshift bracket has now broken,  I like to find out if a correct support bracket can be fabricated or sourced. Many thanks and sorry for the confusion.

Not the best picture.  I don't know about sourcing.  I'm sure one could be fabricated.

I will try to find more pictures for you with the tank off.

Many thanks! This is exactly what I wanted a photo of. For the time being, I'll go with a temporary bracket to hold this tank in place, until I have the entire engine bay emptied and have this cradled bracket assembly fabricated as shown on your 280SL. Again, sincere thanks for the photo.

Hi,
I suppose there has been more than one version.

Take a look there, maybe they have it:

MB PN A1136262514, but I would not hope too much MB have it.

Super! This is exactly the MB part I am looking for. I will check with our local dealer to see if the part is available through Mercedes and if not, I will definitely order it through Niemoeller.  I truly appreciate your help in identifying the correct replacement. I will also let you know immediately when I receive my restored chrome pieces from Classic Chrome in Warsaw. Again, many thanks!

Thank you for the great photos of a beautiful engine compartment.  I now have an excellent idea of how my coolant support bracket should look.

You are welcome, my pleasure!

Look, I think MB do not have it (grey dot in Webparts), but please check. Niemoeller - they say it is available on request, which means they may not have it either.

Now, as you know exactly what you are looking for, maybe try the US based options: https://www.kkmfg.com/catalog_loader2.php?page=113BodyPanels.xml

Even if they do not have it, maybe they have a chassis they can cut it from.

Perhaps a good way would be to e-mail a couple of ebay sellers - someone may have a chassis to cut it from. Try posting in Wanted to Buy.

I do not know the US suppliers so well, but maybe worth calling.
