You can take these apart and clean the contacts.  Also, these are used on many Mercedes sedans of the era. Even carbureted six cyl. sedans with the early automatic used these switches. Uses ones should be available.

Hi Joe , yes thanks for that . I have asked my transmission man to try and do this but he didn't sound hopeful hence why I was putting the feelers out for a new / used one . We'll endeavour to open it and clean it up and see how we get on .
