RHD 1967 250SL 5 speed restoration.
« on: January 27, 2019, 23:54:36 »
Some of you will recall that a few years ago I had a shell 3D scanned and then reverse engineered some jig brackets from it. I wouldn’t be at al surprised if I am the only person in the world with these brackets that are designed to bolt to a universal jig bench.

That's almost as scary as watching the "day of the Triffids"

That jig is amazing

That is so much worse than mine it is scary.  That makes the "Submarine of Neckar" look restorable.  My bodyman also made fixtures for his Celette bench after finding out how much Celette wanted for them. Ouch.

You tell me this after I went to all the trouble of having drawings done and the jig brackets made? :)

In hours or money?

Either way this owner is just happy to have the car rebuilt.

So, after 10 months she's off the jig and on to the spit for final work before she goes off to be acid dipped (again) and electroprimed.
A couple of taster pictures here but plenty more at this link:

I suppose each are required so might as well go with both. It might help someone to decide if a project like this makes sense.

How did you make out with the engine you were trying to sort out?

In strict monetary terms a project like this can never make sense but thankfully, even if rarely, it’s not always about the money.

What engine?

I think you’re referring to an engine I was having trouble with that kept smoking, in which case I ended up buying a new cylinder head from MB.

Beautiful work.  an amazing project.  Even if the work is not cost effective the fact that restoration at this level is even contemplated is an indicator that our cars are more valuable and appreciated as each year passes.  thank you for sharing this project.

Colin,
Dare I ask what original sheet metal remains? Dash, transmission tunnel, firewall and partial cross braces?

This has to be the most extensive pagoda restoration ever, and the experience it requires to pull of such a feat boggles my mind!

Front chassis rails, front bulkhead, dash, tunnel, rear cross member, rear bulkhead and soft top stowage bin, rear shock towers and aluminium panels. Oh, and the glove box lid and air intake flap!

I have been repairing these cars for 40 years and for the first 35 years I wouldn’t have contemplated it!
For clarity I am not the panel beater but I am the one who knows what the panel beater needs to do so that it’s right.
