Is it prepped? Have a chat with Colin Ferns (has done mine)? If it's just a spray job, there must be any number of places you could go... I know folk who've had good experience with Chesterton Coachworks

Hi, the car has been repainted at least twice. It has signs of filler and has some nice rust spiders in a number of places. The car is never likely to be sold so would like have it done properly, hence wanting a bare metal job. I’m not looking for it to be a show car, as want to still use it, but want it to be as good or better than it left the factory.

My belief for a bare metal respray it would be best to acid dip the car.   I know some are not keen on that approach.  Where I had it done, it was a two tank procedure one for paint removal and one for rust removal followed by a rust preventative procedure.  Since the car is dipped the rust is removed from areas that cannot be reached by other techniques.   Have attached photos of car after the dipping process.

Stripping every last nut and bolt from a car and dipping it rather than a bare metal respirated will result in cost increase factor of 10.

Lots of good body shops out there but price will depend on what you want exactly and if you are happy to do some of the work yourself. If you want to save money you could strip the car of its chrome etc and even paint strip the car in readiness?

Interesting thread.  I have been working on my car body also, however I keep thinking to myself whether it would be just worth me getting it acid dipped and then just repair the metal that (hopefully), is left.....

It's not cheap though, especially if you want to have an electrophoretic coating afterwards which I believe is essential if you want to protect those inner box sections etc.

GeeMerc can I ask who did you use for the dipping process? Do you think it would still be suitable even though I have already repaired half the structural members of the car?

Agreed, there is a lot of work completely stripping everything down and removing each piece, and it will expose EVERYTHING which means you will have more metal to fix than imagined...


Around here it's about $2,000 for the unibody and an extra hundred for doors, bonnet, etc each

Similar to what you quote but it's not the inital dip that's the expensive part it's the additional dip after you have worked on the body and the additional coatings anti corrosion coatings that are applied after you have done all your repairs.

There's an outstanding sprayer on the A303 in sort of Salisbury way. Not cheap (did an E-type recently for about 14k) but his work is concours. I can't imagine a pagoda would be significantly less. He doesn't acid dip, but that is bare metal.

Thanks Jameshoward, I have had an estimate for the job but it starts at £35k and will be more if there is additional work, which there will be. This is from a specialist firm that does exceptional work, mostly on old Ferrari’s and Aston’s.  Can you give the details of the firm on A303 please.
