Meaning of production number
« on: March 30, 2019, 21:48:09 »
The data card of my 230 SL shows a production number of 00051.
The stamped date at this card is 12th of October 1965.
The VIN ends with number 12817, so it means it's built in July 1965:

The production number 00051 in combination with 113042 10 means it's number 51 LHD with manual gear.
But is it number 51 of the day, of the month, of the year, or what else?

Again something else.

Not at all.
The Production Number is a rolling number for the manufacturers internal purpose. It has no hidden meaning

Eric,

That is a damned good question... ;D

The 'solution' on this has not yet publically been explained so far.
And I have observed the "Pagoda market" and associated datacard peculiarities for more than 30 years now.   :o

I am pretty confident the production number (in your case 00051) is an ongoing number belonging to that paticular "Schicht Nr." (workshift no.) which has fabricated your car.
But no official confirmation yet.

At least this number 00051 can/could be found several times during the Pagoda production period from 1963 - 71. ;)

In fact, some manufacturers indicate really very strange serial numbers that are difficult to understand the first time. I have repeatedly encountered this and it is really a very difficult case, especially if this thing was released quite a long time ago. I was looking for a serial number that had the number 4444, unfortunately I didn't find what I was looking for, but I accidentally found a site. So I discovered numerology. Yes, it's just a hobby, but it's a great way to pass the time!
