is power washing the rear axle advisable with the understanding i need to stay away from pinion, breather and brakes ( backing plates) and rubber bellows
focusing on the axles themselves?

I wouldn't think that power washing is necessary. Seems like you could use simple green or another industrial strength cleaner and brush off with water. The higher pressure of the pressure washer will find its way into places you don't want.
