How to tell a 5 speed
« on: July 12, 2019, 20:46:01 »
I have been presented to me a supposed ZF 5 speed.

Can anyone tell me what to look for to determine if it is in fact a true ZF 5 speed.

The number on the case is 111 261 05 01.  My info says that it is a 4 speed.  Am I wrong?  Can someone post a picture, if possible, of a 5 speed.

Thanks in advance.

There is a manufacturers plate with the serial No of the box on its left side (see pic attached)
"ZF" is cast into the housing and the alloy rear end piece also.

Sure looks like the one I have.  One a 4 speed, reverse is to the left beside first gear. On a 5 speed, reverse is over to the right and below fifth gear. Pretty hard to confuse them.

You are wrong.
That's an ordinary MB 4-speed gear box in the car you look at, no true 5-speed.
(5-speed probably only because there is also a reverse ...)
The real ZF 5-speed as pictured does not carry any MB numbers, only ZF numbers.
It's larger and much longer than the ordinary 4-speed.

Doesn’t it go faster than a 4 speed?

I can always tell if it's a 5 speed transmission. I just can't tell it much.
