help needed reassembling my Pagoda Engine
« on: July 23, 2019, 20:11:16 »
It's an old story.. classic car taken apart, then allowed to sit for years.  That's the case for my 1964 230SL roadster, acquired some 10 years ago.  Shortly afterward, I decided to remove the engine for full rebuild, and disassemble the body.  Then I ran out of steam..  The engine DID get rebuilt, but has sat, uninstalled, ever since.  Now I am finally ready to get this baby back on the road.  Although the block and head were fully assembled at overhaul time, I never got around to installing all the hard and soft lines or auxiliary components.

I am now well on the way, and do have lots of photos taken prior to the disassemble.  Sadly, they were not enough, and I have a number of questions regarding routing of lines and placement of components.  I DO want to mention that the P.O. had substituted a 280SL engine in place of the original 2.3, but it was all running and functioning fine when I removed it due to extremely low compression across the board.

Here goes.. hopefully the first two photos will be displayed.. regarding routing of coolant lines, has me scratching my head.  It is unclear how/where to employ that longish metal coolant line with a "Y" at one end?  I can't see any logical place to run that hard line, nor where the various hoses connect.. In particular.. the hose to the remote coolant reservoir, the coolant(?) fitting on the throttle body, and the coolant nipple on the plug-side block, just behind the injector pump.
Any guidance and/or pictures of these connections would be greatly appreciated.

I just installed this not too long ago since mine was missing and PO used just straight hose.

One end goes to the firewall hose (maybe 6" long of hose).

The other end goes to that Y-fitting.  You'll just need longer hose (maybe 10" worth?).

You have a late 280SL engine in an early 230SL. That could present some interesting challenges.

Since Benz Dr. says it is a 280SL engine...
The pictures will not help much, but they are the best I have at hand now.

Thanks, very helpful indeed
Where your hard coolant pipe goes to the passenger (right) side heater connection in the firewall..does the pipe have a "Y" like the one pictured in my post? If so, where does that Jose connection attach to?

Yes it's a bag of worms Dan
Can you shed any light on the intended connection to those two rusty outlets shown in the final photo of my initial post? The one hose fitting behind the injector pump is obviously for coolant. The other to the right looks like an oil line fitting?

The hose coming off of your water pump connects to the pipe you have on the floor and the Y fitting end goes to the firewall where your heater core is mounted. The other part of the Y goes to the rad overflow tank.

The fitting by the injection pump goes to the heater core pipe on the firewall. The other fitting is where you mount the sending unit for your temp gauge. I use a bit of anti-seize around the gland nut so it doesn't stick to the sending unit bulb. Very easy to twist the capillary tube off otherwise.

Thanks Dan,
That is extremely helpful and exactly what I needed.  I had come to the conclusion as well that the other fitting was for a temp sender.

Here is a sketch of the coolant flow system on a W113 Pagoda. Courtesy of Burkhard Scheiter (Germany).
Water pump is No 50, 91 is the WRD on top of the FI pump "ESP". No 31 is the heating element for the passenger compartment.
No 25 is the butterfly valve/thottle body on the inlet manifold.
Note: there were variants, for instance 250SL had the water/oil cooler

Dan,
You've been very helpful.  Now can you confirm:  That fitting on the throttle body (shown in the accompanying picture just an inch or two from the cut hose off the pump inlet).. is that the vacuum connection for the Power Brakes?

Thanks again,
Phil

No. The vacuum connection for your brake booster is on top of the intake manifold. I believe it should use a hard plastic line or hose.

The two connections on your throttle body are coolant lines if that's what you're referring to.
