Front Brake Calipers
« on: September 26, 2019, 22:52:21 »
Geez.  My 1966 230SL has Girling calipers.  I find a lot of dialogue on switching to ATE and I'm not opposed to doing that.  But if I go re-manufactured,  my Girling Core probably won't suffice as exchange for the ATE?  Where can you find the ATEs?  I've looked on Rock Auto but don't see those.

Or, where can I get the rebuild kit for the Girlings?

Many thanks,
Harry

I bought ATE calipers from eBay about £80 - outright purchase no exchange.

Your local auto part store probably won't care as long as they get a caliper back. Besides, the core charge is usually pretty nominal.

Also there is a company that rebuilds and restores calipers for older cars called PMB performance.  They restore calipers as well as sell parts.

Here is another company you might want to check out for a caliper rebuild.

All - thanks very much.  I pulled a piston out of one of the calipers last night and this would be more than a standard rebuild.  There is a lot of rust and pitting, and I'm not sure these can even be rebuilt without machining - which would quickly become more expensive than replacing.  I'm leaning towards just biting the bullet and buying the new ATEs.

I am restoring my car and I started down the road to restore my calipers but decided to just replace them all.  It was an ouch but I probably never have to think about them again.

Same here, bit the bullet and replaced the calipers. While I was at it, installed new booster, new master cylinder, replaced rubber hoses with stainless steel braided brake hoses, new rotors, and new brake shoes at rear -any and all issues solved!

This should outlive me...

Best,
Mike
