Upholstery Codes Full Details
« on: December 15, 2019, 05:29:18 »
Guys,

It’s not often one of my questions goes unanswered ( posted in the Body, Interior, ... section on December 6th) but l somehow managed.
Was it a stupid question or was everyone stumped?

I’ll try again here :

The Technical Manual has a lot of information on Upholstery Codes but it only shows the Full Details of upholstery codes for numbers 241 through to 245 .... a teaser as it were. See attached.

I’m specifically looking for information about Trim Code #139 for my 1970 280SL which l am restoring.

Coincidentally “jeffc280sl” asked a similar question back in 2003.

So does anyone know if full upholstery details are available for all trim codes?

Thanks in advance

Bam!!!

Just like that the mystery is solved in 80 minutes!

Much appreciated ‘WRe’ - this Forum is truly remarkable.

Also pleased to see that the underdash panels were Dark Brown ( which l think is it better match) whereas a lot people were telling me they were black.

Perhaps we could add that link to the Tech Manual - or is there already?

I just added the link. Do you think it's worth having the link at the top of the page, as well as in the text below the excerpt from the table?

Seems to me the scanned pages don't include the relevant description for 230SLs before VIN 12467. Did I miss something? The pages of the book are not numbered in a consecutive fashion, so I can't tell if pages were skipped in the scanning process.

WRe, this is fantastic - thank you for sharing!

I wonder if this booklet covers 280SL till end of production. We had some discussions here about the details, e.g. sill trim colour. If this book is complete through to the production end, we may have a document saying how the late 280SL might have been trimmed.

WRe,
Thank you so much. I have asked about this in the past for my Vin 012287, but have never seen it before.
Pawell,
I don't speak German, but doesn't the end of production start on page 11 of WRe's attached link?
Specifically from 012089 and onward which would include mine.
BUT, for my color 245, blue interior, it states the ribbed rubber at the door threshold is supposed to be dark blue, and I have talked with several of our experts and all believe that they were not blue on those 280 SLs where this document states they are blue. I have been thoroughly convinced that my door threshold rubber is supposed to be dark grey, which looks black to many people, but NOT dark blue.

So, really, what is that document and is that a date of 1974 on it?
Maybe someone who speaks German can help with that question.

Hi,
I really don't know why these documents - there exist more of them e.g. for W100, 107, 108, 109, 111, 114, 115, 116: https://mercedesclubs.de/ausstattungshandbuch - are all dated "1974" but I assume that they are reproductions of old docs. The inside looks different to the front page and there is no note inside relating to the date 1974.
Because of the colors I'am convinced that not everything ist correct in all these docs of MB, including service and maintenance manuals.

Iconic,

Yes, this is our old discussion on the colour of the sill trims. We had this specific page with colours and matrials on the forum before, speaking about 280SL from 012089 onwards. I was suspecting there may be a later update, but it does not seem so.

It does say "dark blue", but I do not think this is the only truth. I think it could have been that the colour was changed to black or dark grey later during production and I would fully understand if Daimler decided not to produce another lot of dark blue trims, but used what they had on stock.  They might or might have not documented it via a memo or update of some sort. It could have been different for Europe and US - there are hundreds of possibilities. This was the time of printed materials, updates were not that easy.

I have dark blue rubber trims on the sills, but it may not be correct, I know that.

I quoted several times on this forum an elder gentleman I met in Essen years ago, who used to work for Daimler in the 60-ies. And he said just that: for trim, upholstery, etc., if an item was out of stock, they just used what they had, sometimes asking ordering party if it is ok, if the difference was substantial. My question at that time was about square weave carpet on my 1970 car.

The dates on the documents are the "published" dates. So, the 1974 refers to the year that particular issue of the "Ausstattungshandbuch" was published. This makes sure, you look at the latest issue, which in this case should include all W113s. And yes the last pages refer to chassis-numbers "012089++" i.e.; all vehicles with VIN numbers after that.
The rubber on the sill of my German spec 280SL, 022774, December of 1970 is original and it is black. The book shows different colors for different interior codes. In general, leather and MB Tex have different sill cover colors and within leather and MB Tex it varies also.
If there are any specific questions about the German, please ask.

Mike,

Thank you for your kind clarification of the booklet issue date and applicability.

My car is German delivery, March 1970 (stamp on the datacard), VIN 016726 and upholstery code 245. Few years ago, during restoration, I was looking for the clues on the colour of the rubber sill trims. We had this page at that time, that is part of the booklet we talk about here. It is stated dark blue there. This is how I did my sill trims. Then Iconic asked the same question. As it turned out, several Members had this type of upholstery with black sill trims. So now I am not sure which colour is the correct one for 245 upholstery. I am not advocating dark blue - it may not be correct. Other items were, e.g. safety belts grey (which is what I did as well).

It is great this booklet is there, I think, as it can help a lot, across the upholstery codes and manufacturing dates, during restoration.
