Front subframe covers
« on: December 17, 2019, 11:45:53 »
Hi all,

Does anyone know if the steel subframe mount covers had rubber on them on the underside?

I'm restoring mine and one had rubber and the other didn't though I wonder if someone had glued the rubber on

See attached photo,

Rgds, Joe

I have mine apart too. I don't have rubber on the inside of the plates.

Interesting, I don’t see the rubber in the parts catalogs either. I will check mine again for traces of rubber.

Yes, there was rubber vulcanized onto there, on this part. See picture showing new part (From SLS website).
Purpose of the rubber disk was, that there would be some last ditch cushioning of the front suspension, when the subframe mount itself had separated/collapsed.

As mentioned, mine do not look like they had rubber on them at any time. However, it is possible that they were changed at one point in the past.

Thanks everyone for the prompt replies. Now to work out how to glue some rubber back on in the event of subframe mount collapse which I guess will be unlikely as I'll forever keep an eye this baby once I get it running again.

The Germans thought of everything!!!

The plates are SL only and just keep the engine from rising enough to hit the hood.  The rubber just lessens the "smack" if you hit a really big bump.  I am not sure if it is the same as it used to be but the mount kit for a sedan which is the same lounts without the plates was much cheaper than the SL kit.

I thought the 280SL did not have these covers?

I think what 280SL did not have were the plastic covers on top. I think I will use them, by the way, as quite some dirt is accumulating there...
