Search Question
« on: January 17, 2020, 23:08:50 »
I may have missed a "How to Find" but is there any way to search the member database to find specific member's model ownership and their specific car's colors?

My car is a European model in DB571(h) (Metallic Red) with a antique yellow leather interior.  I think it would be interesting to share info/photos etc with members of similar models/color combinations.

Is there a way to search that info that anyone can explain to me?

merci

There is a car registry in the TechnManual but i am not too sure anyone has been putting their car details in there recently which they should.

It is sortable for full members.

In the car registry, in the yellow bar at the top, just click on the color column to sort.  If the member included the color code it will group that info by color code number 1st, then alphabetical.

More replies might be generated if you would post some photos of your car in a new thread entitled, "Anyone seen this combination?:.

Using Garry's link, look at the top section "Explanation"

The Car Registry is open to all members of the Pagoda SL Group. To include your car in the Registry, please send an e-mail to the Registrar at registrar@sl113.org, and include all the details for listing in the table.

Thank you to those replying to my inquiry.

The Pagoda SL Group is an extremely valuable source of information for us Pagoda owners (and others of course)
I feel that an updated and easily sorted registry could be increasingly valuable.  However, there might be some reluctance of members to list their car in this day of people misusing information and “hacking” etc . I can see a reluctance of members to include pertinent information in a single database.

Of course, the file (assumedly excel) needs to be consistent in data entry and appearance to be useful and sortable (e.g. year first, then model; paint code with DB number first, then color nomenclature/description etc.)

Not to add another burden or project to admin or board, but maybe an inquiry to members of their interest would be beneficial to see if the task is worthwhile.

Interesting, I do see that many members note some info as footnotes on their forum postings/reply.

Yes, right now it is sort of random.  There is great utility in being able to sort it by name, year/model, or VIN.  If one got really inventive, one might even figure out a way to sort the VINs chronologically without regard to the two digit 10, 12, 20, 22 LHD/RHD & transmission indicator, or search/sort vehicles in such a way that it might even be possible to easily just find RHD or manual transmission vehicles.  If it were possible to cross reference the VINs with the build date range table elsewhere in the Tech Manual one would even be able to search for all vehicles in the database built in February 1966, for instance.

I belong to a number of collector vehicle registers and it is uniformly mandatory with those other organizations to provide, at bare minimum, full VINs and full engine numbers, including noting if it is a replacement engine, in order to be a member of those registers.

Not all who have added vehicle details to the Pagoda SL Group registry included complete VINs, much less complete engine information.  A car registry is only truly useful if certain information is uniformly complete, such as full VIN, full engine number, and color codes.  So it might be wise for us all to check and update our registry listings accordingly.

As an example of this I noticed when checking that there is a typo in the engine number information for my 230SL:  one "zero" is missing (it reads 127.981 12 04049 but should read 127.981 12 004049) which means that it does not appear in proper sort order when sorting the table by engine number.

Where complete information is available, a registry such as ours over time can become a really important resource for those of us interested in production details and assembly plant practices back in the day.  For instance I noticed that two LHD automatic '66 230SLs have sequential engine numbers: 127.981 12 003867 and 127.981 12 003868, yet their chassis numbers are several hundred vehicles apart.  A more complete and accurate registry would shed additional light on things like this.

It would be great if someone would take on the task of reorganising the Registry data base.

Everything in the Technical Manual has been done by many Members who have made an effort imputing data and populating the Manual over many years and are continuing to do so.

Any Full Member can access and populate the Tech Manual, in fact the Group is dependant on people doing just that.

Do i hear any volunteers to work on it for the next year and see if they can reorganise and restore the Registry.  You don’t need to be a Board Member, they are already doing other things in the background to ensure the group runs.  I am sure Peter our Administrator could arrange access to the Register if some one or two will step up to do it. :P

I fixed that for you. The Registry is the only area of the Tech Manual that can only be edited by me, or the Registrar (Richard Madison). Precisely so we can actually ensure some consistency in the data.

But:
  • Very few people provide us with data at all
  • When people sell their car, the do not notify us
  • Consistency in data provided is not always there
  • It is not an Excel list, it is a data table in the Wiki, with a simple sorting facility

I don't know whether it is worthwhile to spend much more time on this, given the above factors.
