New to the SL Group / Project Car of BaT / 230 SL
« on: January 30, 2020, 17:33:37 »
Hello,
I am new to the group, having recently purchased this 1965 230SL off of BaT.    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1965-mercedes-benz-230sl-18/

Current work is getting prepared to start the motor. Compression test, new water pump, filters, alternator, battery, etc.

I've ordered the data card from the classic center.

Question: is there a current provider of VIN plate embossers?

My car had the VIN Plate removed at painting.  It's missing. The prior owner provided a new VIN plate but it needs to have the VIN no. embossed.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated,

Paul

Welcome.  According to BAT you have bought 27 cars!   I gotta ask - are you an addict with a massive garage or a dealer?

Either is fine within this welcoming group.

What is going on here??? BaT user "Mbrad" bought this car. I know Mbrad because I sold him another Mercedes SL. His name is not Paul, and he is not located in California.

You are correct, I am not MBrad on BaT. My name on BaT is Bigmotorssmallcar.  I was the no. 2 bidder.  I did not win the BaT acution, Mbrad won the auction. I leave it to MBrad to explain his events after the sale, but things did not go to plan.  Mbrad did not complete the purchase.  BaT contacted me 5 weeks after the auction closed and asked if I was still interested.   I was put in touch with the seller and a separate  negotiation and sale was completed.    These are the facts.

I am neither.  I work from a two car garage in my home. My wife (Joyce) parks each night on the one side, my shop is on the opposite side.

I am guessing the BaT stats are incorrect. I have owned many cars, but few from BaT. I am a massive advocate for BaT for their efficiency and transparency.  I have sold maybe 4 cars on BaT and I am guessing bid on 27 others.

An addict? Well, maybe.

Well congrats on the purchase! I know some people here had their eyes on it. I'm glad all parties were able to get a deal done after the fact .

Paul

The 27 cars came from mbrad ID on BAT since I assumed you were mbrad, the winner.  Now It makes more sense.

Very interesting project.

Welcome, Paul.  We met at the 2018 O'Fest, where my CS won the Parker Spooner award.  Many thanks for that!  I've owned my 230SL for about 20 years; bought it in Germany where I had it restored.  Have done a lot of work on it and happy to assist with your restoration if you need any help.  Looks like a nice car -- good luck!  This forum, like the E9 forum, is simply outstanding and is populated with knowledgeable Pagoda fans who are always happy to help with any problem, no matter how trivial.  The Technical Manual is also a very valuable tool.

Lowell,
Congrats on the Parker Spooner award!  (BMW E9 / 3.0 CS community annual award to the most enthusiastic E9 torch carrier -it is quite an honor)

Thank you for your kind introduction.  I am excited to join this Pogoda community and to discover that there is another group of sports car adults cherishing old German sports cars.

I look forward to drilling down on some details very soon.

Thank you again for the kind greeting,
Paul

BonnyBoy,
You mentioned pictures? So here we go.

I am installing my new water pump. There are two weep holes. I would normally orient these at 12 O'clock and 6 O'clock.

This pump also has a crescent shaped notch on the lower right side.

This image is just of the pump being dry fit.

Is there a specific orientation to that crescent shaped notch?  Where does it go in the 'clock' orientation?

Much appreciated,
Paul
