Well Pagoda-ites - I think I just re-cornered the market on the square exhaust tips. Palm Beach Classics had a pair for sale, and I could not help myself.

Just got them today.

We had a thread with a similar title but I could not reply to that, locked out for time I believe. So this is the latest update.

This is what the exhaust tips looked like on our SL's when they left the Factory.
Today, only the rolled (rounded) end is available

Somehow the square ends look more elegant and match the "architectural lines" of the pagoda.

Exactly - it is amazing - such a small detail and makes so much difference...

Very nice find, I heard on the grapevine that you had the market cornered long before you found this pair! If you find them cluttering up your storage space just let me know. They would look very nice on my “mostly original” 280SL! 😎

I have had several sets of original tips over the 42 years of owning my car, the last set disappeared while at a well known Mercedes dealer in London to have the back end fixed after I was hit in the rear by another pagoda while stationary at a junction in Germany.

Anyway what I was getting to was the hollow square section seamed vulnerable to denting hence the several sets while having the car so I decided to get some made and am very pleased with the outcome, the square section is solid bronze so no fear of denting ( shouldn't need another set )

Here is a snap of the ones on my 250 SL. Had to get close in to be able to see the detail.

Very cool Maurice. Did you take a set of the rounded tips and use those for the transplant.

I found a machine shop willing to make a custom tips for me but I need the tip dimensions. Any help would be great!

NOTE - SEE UPDATED DIAGRAM posted on 15 March 2020 to give more exact dimensions.

The inner/diameter of the tube and length are the same as a current MB tip.

The square edge is 4 mm long at the outside gently tapering to 3 mm at where it meets the outer diameter of the tube. I am not able to get a read of the height of the square edge. I will bring this along to our Pagodas and Beer event on the 21st to have a cross check on the dimensions.

UPDATE - I was able to use a digital caliper to get a better take on the dimensions.

I have posted the update photo.

Also I checked a couple of the other square tips (the ones on the car) and noticed that they did not have the very slight angle from the outside of the square lip to where it meets the outer overall tube. That tells me there were some slight manufacturing variations.

I just got back from Blackert Machine and he was not there. None of my phone calls have been returned. I do have another place in mind and will report back.
