69 280sl ash tray
« on: March 08, 2005, 11:49:27 »
Hello,
Did the 69 280 sl come in a matching blue ashtray as standard equipment for a blue iterior? I seem to have read somewhere that the ashtray covers only came in black.

My 280sl has a blue interior and I was thinking of replacing my worn out ashtray to blue. But if blue ashtray did not come as an option in the 60's then I'll just stick to the black leather.

many thanks

A '69 with a blue interior would have a blue ashtray. The problem is the new ashtrays available today only come in black, so you'll have to  find an old blue one or either re-dye or disassemble a new black unit to fit a piece of blue Tex in the insert.

I noticed Ray Paul is listing both blue and black ashtrays on the SL Classics website.

I got a dark blue one from Ray at SL Classics to replace mine that had a missing lid. Then, just recently, I learned my car probably came with a black one. Early 230 w/blue interior....Who knew? Anyway, I'm happy with blue.

if you want a blue one but can only obtain black, it's not too hard to change it yourself with a small piece of matching MB-tex.  the trick is to use something strong but thin, like a pen knife whose blade isn't too valuable to you, and pry up the little tabs that hold the outer chrome edge from the inside chrome bottom.  then replace the vinyl insert with a little foam padding and the blue tex.
