Rear light lenses
« on: March 20, 2020, 18:36:30 »
Hi All,
For European Pagoda's there appears to be two different types of rear light lenses, one has a longer, more elongated, reversing light section which i believe was for the 230/250 year's ?  and the other has a shorter reversing light section which made the amber indicator section slightly longer, which i believe was for the 280's.

Am i correct ?  I have seen loads of picture's of 280's with the longer more elongated lights so now i,m questioning which is correct for a 69' 280.

Thanks

Ray

The early 280's shared the same lens with the 230/250.  Specifically, up to chassis 007938.  (see first picture below).  FROM chassis number 007939 the later style was used.  (see second picture below).  So for a 280 it'll depend on what the chassis number is as to which lens is used.

With your being a European model it would have orange turning signal lenses.  The U.S. models had all red lenses up to a certain point, and then later on the U.S. models also had orange turning signal lenses.  If you're car was originally a French model the reversing light lens would also be orange, not clear.

I believe they used the same lens on late 111 coupes as shown in your picture.

Indeed they did....and still do.  I get a kick out of people arguing that there is no way a W113 tail light lens will fit on a late W111 coupe` or cabriolet.  Most people assume that because they're different chassis they must use different tail lights, and I can understand that.  The most absurd defense I've ever heard was

"A W111 coupe`/cabriolet was a bespoke hand made car.  For one to share a part with something as lowly as a Pagoda would be blasphemous."

My reply to this statement was:

"So, are you telling me that a 600 is less of a car because it shares the same steering wheel with a W110, a W114/W115, as well as a Pagoda?!"  This person looked like a deer caught in headlights when I said that, and this person STILL refused to believe any of that.  Sometimes you have to leave people to exist in their own fake little world.  The truth will always find them.  Though, I would have LOVED to have been a fly on the wall when this person discovered that what I said was true.

The lens is the same but the bezel is different on a 111.  Having done three 600's I can say that only a few parts are common with other Benz cars and for those few things I was very happy they were. The hood star is slightly larger on a 600 than anything else from that time period and for that star MB graciously accepted my 500 dollar donation to their good cause. Namely, their pocket.

Thanks to all your reply's.

Having checked my chassis no., which is lower than 7938 I do have the correct longer elongated reversing light. Happy day's.

It also explains why you see both types on 280's.  Nothing is rarely as straight forward as you might imagine.

Thanks guy's.
