Fuel line
« on: April 15, 2020, 02:02:07 »
I recently resealed my short fuel pump and needed to change the fuel lines.  I ordered a kit from mercedessource, but found my line from the pump to the hard line is about 3-1/2 inches short.

I can’t find one online for the 1967 230sl.  Am I missing something? Was there something different about the 1967 year?
It is the hose with the fitting, and needs to be about 21-1/2 inches.

Am I doing something wrong here?

If the hose you're referring to is the one highlighted in the picture below, then they should be the same for 230, 250, and 280 models.  It shows that short and long style pumps used the same hose, too.  The part number is 113-476-09-26.

Feels like either the hose in the set you bought was too short or perhaps you tried to route the hose in a wrong way. I bought this line from Mercedes and it came with fairly long hose, good half meter, that was even a bit too long for me.

Routing you see on the attached - goes from fitting, out of the container and up to the clamp in the floor.

That is the hose I am referring to.  The hose I got was only 18 inches from the metal fitting. It is clearly shorter from the one I removed, which looked original.

Please excuse my naïveté, but how do I order directly from Mercedes?  Or is there a go-to supplier that most on this forum trust?

You should be able to order through your local dealer, or call the folks at the Classic Center in Irvine - (949) 598-4850

I have a Webparts system to order on-line, but if I did not have it, I would go to the local dealer and give him part number.

You need to know your VIN, at least the first 6 digits. You can call them with part number and check if it is available before you go. If they agree to order via phone call - they will order and you just go and pick up. Or ask them to send it by courier. But if you have a part number and you do not know if it is available - call to check availability.

If you need to find a part, or order when you know it is available, you probably need to go there. They would tell you: "no, it is old car, we do not have it". Then you tell them:" move your a... and find it." Then they will find it and will tell you "forget it" or "it will take a while as we need to order through classic center" or we will have it within 24hrs" or "we will have it in 72hrs". Then you go and pick it up. At least this is how it works here.

Fluids, coolant - they may have on stock.

You talk to them personally to develop relationship and get a discount.

In the US you also have Tom in Classic Center, Irvine, who is a great help.

That shorter one looks an awful lot like the one that would go from the left side of the fuel filter housing to the metal fuel line below the left subframe mount.

I think Aaron got it.

The fitting on the line between fuel pump and hard fuel line has a different angle of the fitting, a sharp angle, not a square angle.

I ordered a genuine Mercedes part, and the Cohline equivalent, we will have to wait and see what the discrepancy is...

Still short!

I got the Genuine Mercedes part today... still short!
I guess I will have to splice with some generic hose... looks like 5/16 ID hose is the same?

What is the best way? Brass coupler I found on Amazon?

Before you go to Jerry rig anything make sure that your fuel pump and its mounting bracket are orientated in the correct direction, and make sure that the metal fuel line this hose connects to hasn't been cut/shortened.

And no.  5/16 is SAE sized hose.  Buy the correct metric hose, and don't use cheap worm drive hose clamps.  Use anything other.

You can take a Dremel and cut the factory fitting alongside carefully to free the metal fitting from your old line, then buy good brand fuel hose and fit it with a clamp.

But it puzzles me why MB part is too short....

Perhaps double check the pump and bracket/cover orientation and hose routing on the picture I enclosed earlier.

My hard line stops about here.  I spliced a short piece of 5/16 ID fuel hose with a double barb coupler.  Working fine.

I see - definitely someone "modified" this metal line.
