Brake force regulator
« on: April 18, 2020, 05:16:30 »
Hello everyone! I am in the final stage of my 2.5 years restoration of my 280 SL and have now hit the (hopefully) last challenge before I can start and test drive the car. When trying to bleed the brakes it turned out that the brake force regulator did not allow liquid to get to both of the rear calipers. No matter how hard I have been pushing the pedal - no reaction. So I took it to a mechanic who put in new seals, cleaned it and also put in a new piston: same issue.
I now seem to have two choices: buy a NOS regulator at 600.00 or use a single standard regulator (60.00) plus a distributor t-piece. I think the switching threshold for the factory regulator is 35 bar.

Has anybody done this before and / or are there any other factors to pay attention to? Is my assumption correct that I can use a standard regulator as long as the connections fit and the specs show the correct regulator pressure threshold?

Thank you very much for your insights,

Jan

When lockdown is over I can sell you a new regulator for half the price of Mercedes.

i wonder how many SLs have this failure mode without owner knowledge.  bleeding the rear brakes tells you fluid is flowing.  we should develop a test for those that have concern.  i would not want to drive with faulty rear braking

Anyone willing to ship to the US can have their regulator rebuilt and tested by PMB brakes.  Thoroughly professional outfit.  They do primarily early Porsche brakes but will do anything.  They also test every part before it leaves.

great resource, thanks.  those owners with nose dive or other braking concerns may want to send their unit off for rebuild and testing
