repair set for doorlifting mechanism
« on: April 20, 2020, 08:08:14 »
Gentlemen,

I am doing a full restoration, and wile the doors are out to be resprayed, I am looking at restoring the moving parts in the door lifting mechanism. So, I ordered a repair set from SLS in Germany, their part number 272870.
272870 contains 6 sachets and each sachet, has 7 parts. I presume they are meant for the 3 turning or sliding points that are in each window lifting mechanism.

When I demount such a turning point or sliding part, 4 parts come off, not 7.

I hope that the attached pictures explain my question:

Picture 1: 7 new parts compared to 4 old parts
Picture 2: Sliding point, where I believe that the parts should be used
Picture 3: Empty pin after I have removed the old parts

Have I received some wrong parts?
Am I looking at the wrong place to use these parts? E.g., where does the black ring go? Where does the metal pin go?

I hope I am explaining this clearly... and that somebody here can help me out. In all these years this forum has been soooo helpful for me!

Thanks a lot guys,

Jan

I ordered the window regulator repair kit from MB.  It looks the same as the kit you bought from SLS.

It's a generic kit that applies to several MB models.  There are parts that you will not need.

Edit.

The black ring is a spacer that goes between the door panel and hand crank on the outside.  The original color is white on a pagoda if I remember correctly.

Hello Jan,

I went through the restoration of the window mechanisms in January on a 280SL from 1968, using the same set of parts from SLS as you show in your pictures, and with the same initial puzzlement as you as to the mismatch in number and shape of some parts. In answer to my question, the SLS guy who answered told me, as mrfatboy already explained, that the kit applies to several different models and that I wouldn’t be using all the parts.

The SLS answer was correct, but incomplete, in that you also need to recycle some existing/old parts, for which this kit does not provide a suitable replacement. To be more precise, I could never figure out how some obviously needed replacement SLS parts (F below) could be used on my car. So, here below, I will outline what I did and the parts I used, but if you (or anyone else) can figure out what I couldn’t, I’ll be interested to find a better solution.

Using letters to match your picture of parts:

A    B            C    D

E    F            G    H

I     J

   K

A matches C
B matches D
E matches G
F should replace H but I wasn’t able to figure out how to use it, so I recycled all parts H from the existing mechanisms and reused them (without any problem, only light cleaning needed) and parts F went into the unused heap
I matches the spacer between hand crank and hand panel, as mrfatboy outlined, although of the wrong color (black instead of cream)
J and K are of no use on our cars

The only parts which could be worn a little bit are the slider (C) and its opposing part (D) but, although I replaced them with their new counterparts (A and B), I couldn’t detect any deterioration in the parts I replaced, except for a slight yellowing in spite of cleaning. G could maybe weaken with time, so replacing it with E makes some sense.

All in all, the good news is that at the end of the day, I was able to restore the mechanisms in a satisfactory manner, and it wasn’t rocket science (although adjusting the window pane so that it glides smoothly all the way up/down, stays horizontal, and doesn’t whistle at high speed with hard and soft tops took a long time and many trials). Hope this helps.

Hello Francois and Mr Fatboy,

Thank you so much for your replies. This is extremely helpful!

Francois, thanks for outlining everything in such detail... My findings are exactly the same as yours. Same here, I'm breaking my head over the question of how to use part F. Well, I guess it does not matter much since I am not going to use the part anyway.

All in all a bit of wasted money... but it's not the end of the world. In the meantime I have found out that there is a place on the SLS website where they mention that this is a generic set used for several car models... but it is not very obviously visible.

Best regards,

Jan
