Rocker cover breather fitting
« on: April 22, 2020, 09:58:21 »
Does anyone know whether the breather fitting on top of the rocker cover has any sort of wire gauze or filter mechanism within this fitting or is it just hollow. Look forward to your replies of any pictures would be handy.
Thanks

I'm certain none of the pagodas had this filter/flame trap.  Unless crankcase pressures are excessive from worn/damaged piston rings or cylinder bores there was no need to place a filter in the tappet cover.   The tappet cover already has a baffle in place underneath to prevent oil from escaping.  However, if you feel you want to put one in place they're available. Part number 000-018-32-60.  Just be aware that placing one may cause seepage of oil from other areas such as the front crankshaft seal.

Thanks Aaron for your reply. I was just curious as it was something I heard about and was not sure about it being correct.

Volvo used a flame trap at the valve cover.  They eliminated it when the found it would ice up in the winter and allow the crankcase to over pressure and pop the seal on the camshaft.  Perhaps Mercedes had a similar experience and eliminated it.
