Help! Part needed
« on: March 18, 2005, 17:38:06 »
One simple part has temporarily put the brakes on my restoration project. [:0] Twice we've waited for the correct part to arrive from Germany and twice the wrong part arrived. I'm hoping someone here with a parts car or a tip on where I might find one of these pretty quickly can help.

It is one of the components in the accelorator linkage that transfers movement from one rod to another. The important thing to know is that there is an identical (although mirror opposite) part below the manifold that is attached to the block. That IS NOT the part I need (have plenty of fresh ones just in from Germany). The one I need is above the manifold - the attached photos should be self explanatory.

Thanks in advance. Any help is very much appreciated.

Is 127 070 20 22, lever, the one you have plenty of or the one you need?

Klaus:

I'm not sure of the part number, just that it is the one ABOVE the manifold that I need, not the one below the manifold that is attached to the engine block.

I've added one more photo showing the part as installed on another car.

Thanks.

I am sure I have a couple of these lying around. You do want it to be nice and tight, since it influences the fuel injection linkage set-up. I can drop one in the mail, but I''m not sure how long it will take from here to Atlanta. Just let me know.

In my 230SL parts list book, which could very well be invalid for a 280SL, the parts are as follows:

127 070 19 22 - Angular Lever, below manifold
127 070 02 21 - Control Lever, above manifold

I guess you'll have to get a used one from a Group Member, or find out what part number your restorer ordered and compare it against these provided by Klaus and I.

Ed,
Bit of confusion here I think!
In my view, the lever you're looking for should NOT look like the bottom lever but be somewhat bigger and have a tang on it which is pushed by the constant speed solenoid.
On some engines, even the constant speed solenoid mounting bracket is bolted on the 2 bolts in your first picture with the blue pencil.
Are we on the same hymn page?

Hello Naj - I checked the setup on my car this morning - the critical difference is that Ed most likely has a stick shift car, not an automatic.

On automatic cars, the lever is quite different from the one used on manual transmission cars.

On the manual cars, the top lever is actually smaller than the bottom one (although it looks pretty much the same). On the automatic trans cars, the top lever is larger than the bottom one and it has a different shape: like the tang you refer to for the constant speed solenoid.

Cees, Rodd, Naj, et.al.

The car is a 1971 automatic. To minimize confusion I'm going to ask my restorer, Brian Peters, to respond to your questions / comments.

Cees, once Brian responds and then, assuming you have the exact part I need, is FedEx an easy way for you to ship? I'll provide you with my account number and Brian's mailing address by email if this works for you.

Thanks to all of you for your input.

Ed,
Does this part you need push on (or get pushed by) the constand speed solenoid?

Here is a shot of my automatic set-up. In my case, the upper lever is much larger and is what the CSS pushes up against. (Excuse the 41 years of wear and tear...)  Hey Brian, can you do my car next?

Now I am getting confused myself about the CSS setup, and it's hard for me to double-check with my car in the garage a few miles from my home. Let's wait to hear from Brian.

Ed: I could figure out the Fedex route I'm sure, although they're not as commonly used here. We'll work it out.

Hello Ed,
I could have led you down the garden path after all.
Here's a picture of a late 280 engine with a lever like the one you've described. The CCS is mounted behind the control rod.

Have not got enough picture quality to zoom right in.

P.S: Important to know engine number. Seems like lots of changes on 280s.

Hi all,

The "angular lever" that we need does not have a tang to push the CCS.  Unlike on other years(?), this lever is no where near the CCS.
# 127-070-14-22 is the one with the tang  -  not it.
# 127-070-20-22 is the one below the manifold  -  not it.
# 130-070-00-24 is the bracket that OUR part pivots on.
There is also a variation with a slot in it for a slider  -  not it.
Hope this helps.

I just spoke to the Classic Center and I believe the part # is 130-070-01-22.  Does anyone have one laying around?  I just shot some large photos of this part in place on another car.  They are too big to post I believe, but I can email them off forum if anyone needs them to match up the part.

In summary......

Suggested by Klaus:
127 070 20 22

Suggested by Rodd
127 070 02 21 - Control Lever, above manifold, from 230SL Parts Book

Parts tried or mentioned by Brian:
127-070-14-22 is the one with the tang - not it.
127-070-20-22 is the one below the manifold - not it.
130-070-00-24 is the bracket that OUR part pivots on.

Brian - I'll send you an e-mail, you can send me your pics and I'll size and post them.

I am pretty sure I have this lever. It comes with two thin nylon bushings. Just send me a postal address and I will send one off, Fedex if you like.

Sometimes the pivots on the part are replaceable, so if the part supplied is the same size as the original part, can the little male pivots be swapped around to match the needed part?

I'm really confused.  Shouldn't this car have the progressive linkage in that location?  That is the linkage that has a lever with a roller that transfers motion from the vertical rod to another lever that sends the motion back to the cross-shaft.  It is made up of a bracket with two shafts that mount the two levers.

Guys:

Thanks to all for your help with this subject. We have finally confirmed, through engineering drawings provided by the Classic Center and your help that they do in fact have the correct part and are shipping it to Brian's preferred MB dealer in San Diego. Unfortunately they won't ship directly to him; I guess everybody's got to get their cut.

A couple of you offered to send what was likely the right part and I thank you for those offers. In the end, when Brian got the drawing and confirmation from them, he went ahead and ordered it so as not to delay any longer.

Hopefully, third time is the charm. Again, thanks to you all.

After all this discussion, I hope you can supply us with the actual MB part number from that correct part.  Just curious!

Has anyone determined what the part number is?  Inasmuch as I am going to replace all bushings and any related parts amongst the fuel and shift linkages, it would be nice to order the right part.  ;)
